Took a no frills TDV6 for a test drive as well. Man that throttle response delay would take some getting used to, as will the blinkers on the left side. Missed the first corner as I put the wipers on. ha-ha. Seemed to have enough grunt though once it was up and running, looking forward to the 3.0l.
One question though. It did seem a bit wallowy. Not a great deal and probably more noticeable as I am used to the sporty (low fully adjustable sports suspension and much stiffer), but will the HSE be a little stiffer?
We all joke about 200 series Tojo's handling like boats, but this thing was not far off. Would it have been the tyre size, suspension set of the base model or me just not being used to a larger, heavier vehicle.


I must admit though, I couldn't help but grin afterwards.

Congrats! Re the handling, it is the same for all models, I think you'll find that if went head to head with any other 4WD the disco will win hands down - no comparison. If you've come from driving what you say you have then everything is going to feel like a barge.

You wont notice the quirks after a short time.

BTW you'll have the cleanest windscreen in the street for a while.

Excellent choice on options. The wait will be agonising, but well worth it; it still enjoy driving mine after nearly a year.

There is a fix for the throttle response, the latest which works very well. Don't get it anymore (taking into account you are moving 2.5T).

The wallowing is a lot better than any real 4WD I've driven; it's not as planted as a sedan, but seeing how much braking some people do going around bends in my area, perhaps it's more planted than some sedans. The upside is the ride is much more comfortable, and the soundproofing is excellent (not sure if there is a difference between the TDV6 and the HSE).

I had a Pajero before which was supposed to have car like handling due to monocoque design and independent suspension. It handled very well, even around corners and bends. I felt that the D4, which I bought last November, wallowed a bit too when I first got it but it was really a feeling IMHO. It corners just as well as my old Pajero and I feel just as, if not more, confident in the D4 than the Pajero. Needless to say, everything else about the D4 is so much better than the Pajero from 4WD capability to comfort and specs. I too love getting in the D4 to drive and still occasionally just sit in it Really happy with it and yes, have that permagrin.

Get the e-diff. If I was looking to buy a D4 second-hand, I would only consider the ones with the e-diff.

Got it Mick. Don't think I really needed it, but for peace of mind that it's there and added value for possible re-sale. Not that I plan on selling this car, I think it will be a keeper.

I am pretty confident (based on the many comments this forum and also many reviews I've read) it is as good, if not better than almost any other 4x4's of the same capability, size and weight and it is just me being used to the stiffness of my Sportwagon. It's adjustable setup I have at not far off a racetrack setup, going through corners dead flat. It will be sad to see my wagon sold as it has been a great fun car to own, but on to a more suitable, capable and comfortable D4 it is. Over all a good decision in our lives I reckon!

In the W4 challenge last year on one sharp turn out of the gully, up the hill climb, the elocker cost me 10 points. My D4 would not turn left, front wheels were turned, but the rear kept pushing her straight on. After the second time I hit the flag, I looked at the 4wd screen and saw it was on. I turned TR off, then she turned left....then re engaged mud and ruts. I would have come 2nd, but ended up 7th :-(

The only time it has let me down....she is not quite as smart as she thinks she is....but most of the time she is much smarter.

All other times, it has proved a little bit better having the elocker.

Dealer has given me a delivery date of 18th July. Hopefully they can provide me a VIN soon to look her up on Topix and track shipping. This is going to be a hell of a four month wait!
