Smile Looking to buy used D4 *See Inside*

    Hello all,

I am looking at purchasing a used Disco 4 from a dealership in Sydney

LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 4 Series 4 MY12 SDV6 COMMANDSHIFT SE
    Year 2011
    Colour Fuji White
    Price $58,950

    Kms 68,000

What concerns me is the first service on the car was done at 36000KMs or exactly 12months after purchase, Dealer advised that previous owner drove it up the coast alot mainly highway KM's, apparently he traded in for a new D4 with 8 speed box.
all service after that was done within 10k-15k intervals which is alot less the the recommended 24k,

The car needs a service as the dash is complaining, It drives extremely well, not noticeable clunks and clangs.

They have supplied the following details after I took it for a test drive.

SERVICE ON CAR – NO, SOLD AS IS
    SERVICE COSTS – ALLOW $900 - $1100 P/A NOT INCLUDING BRAKES
WARRANTY COST $3600.00 FOR ANOTHER 2 YEARS / 100,000 AT THE END OF THE CURRENT WARRANTY (FEB 2015 OR 100,000)

    Any advise?

    Thanks and regards

    Sean

If I was you I would go and find another one with proper servicing intervals. Mine was serviced at 24000 km intervals before I got it in late 2012 at 50,000 km and I have always been worried that the service intervals were too long, even though it is strictly in accordance with the schedule for a 2010 D4. 36,000 km is way too long. I am now up to 155,000 km with no engine problems but it is always at the back of my mind.

I service it at about 10,000 km now. I am just coming up for timing belts and front brakes at 160,000 km, which makes the next service expensive. I have also recently replaced the EPB, battery, front LCA's and rear shock assemblies, also steel pan and transmission service at 90,000 km, so not cheap over the last year or so. However, we drive it a lot all over Australia with a lot of off road and towing as well as city driving.

I have seen far more of Australia in the short time since I bought the D4 than in the rest of the 60 years of my life. On my several trips across Australia and to the north, including Cape York and Binns Track, we usually do around 800 - 1000 km a day and travel on the gravel wherever possible, so we don't baby the car.

Ill agree there get one with better service intervals as already stated 36kms is way to many to wait for its first service, mine is just coming up to 12000kms I'm going to put it in then for a service even though its meant to be every 24000kms ill get it done in half that because i also think there to far apart.

    I wouldn't go near it.
    Price is good,we know why.

When you sell it later on,the service records may pop up and bite you in the rear.

You will also have no come back with LR if the vehicle had a big failure after you purchase it,they have a good excuse to wipe their hands of it.

Thanks guys for your prompt responses, you are right, my gut is tell me dont do it, and I'm not sure if I want to get rid of my VW Scirocco which I only bought year before last to have some FUN!

They only offered me 32k on the trade in, I was like "hell no", can get atleast 45 privately.

I really want to make sure I get the right Disco, at the same I would like to have some factory warranty for piece of mind.

it's either that or I get fully spec'd 150 series prado, or 200 series cruiser both of which do the job but don't catch my eye or my heart...

    Regards

I reckon you should wait. Keep your eyes open and wait for the right car to come along. In the meantime, enjoy driving your veedub

If your heart says Disco, it wouldn't be fair on you or Toyota to get a LC200 or Prado. Sure they may do the job, but you'll be forever looking at Disco's with that wandering eye. I still do even though I have one of my own!

I did the fully specced Prado.

    It lasted 3 months.

Luckily bought it at Gold Fleet discount & managed to sell it with very little loss.

    Cheers

I did the prado to and my heart was saying disco I sold it for very little loss to and got a disco best car I've has always brings a smile to your face and 110% better than any of Toyotas offerings even my partner who is very technically inept reckons it's way better than the prado or 200 series.

I test drove that Disco.....and promptly walked away. It is now sold.

On top of the service interval, the box clunked into gear on occasion.

    No thanks.....

I've had about 6 Prado's (work supplied), mostly from new. Last one was a new 150 series - and I still drive a 150 series occasionally.

The 120 series Prado is a better vehicle than the 150 series any day of the week - but none of them comes near the Disco. The Prado is simply not in the same class.

We also have a couple of 200 series Cruisers at work - I've driven one of them a few times. I'd take a Prado over one of them any day.

Always glad to get back behind the wheel of the Disco after I return from site visits.

(Had a near new Pajero last trip and wasn't impressed with that either - the Prado is better).
    Cheers .........
