I contacted AAMi a while back and got the extensive written response
    :
    "Thank you for your email.

AAMI covers your vehicle anywhere in Australia including if its being driven off road.
If AAMI can be of any further assistance or you have any further questions relating to this matter, please do not hesitate to email us at any time.
    Kind regards,"

FYI - Got my insurance premium due at the moment $1319 (MY12, SE, bull bar, snorkel, rear carrier, fuel tank, $80000 agreed value)

    Zilch,

I have confirmed that comminsure (Commonwealth Bank) will cover 4WD all over Australia including tracks as long as you are not involved in any racing, have speed related performance enhancements or illegal/unlawful dealings. This is within their PDS pg 20 point 5 - as quoted by them. They are significantly cheaper than AAMI & NRMA. you can call to get a quote on 13 24 23.

As promised the other insurer was ANFWDC Insurance Systems PH: 9972 3700.
I am not sure how cheap they are, but will find out myself soon when I ring to get a quote.

    Hope this helps.

    Tor,

I tried CommBank last year. I'm glad I was sat down at the time.

Try NAB. They are underwritten by Allianz, and gave me a good quote this year.

So the terrain response knob says sand, mud ruts, grass gravel snow & rock climb - that pretty much covers everywhere you could possibly drive in aus listed by the manufacturer right there in the middle of the console

There's no marking on that knob for vertical rock faces, nor is there a submarine mode. So, if you take it across a 50 degree slope and roll it, they aren't going to pay up. Take it through 2m of water, when LR list the wading depth at 750mm, they won't pay up.

Unless of course my D3 is missing a couple of modes on the dial.

    No. Can it be retrofitted?

Don't tell me it's just a very large roll of duck tape and a 3m extension to the snorkel??

I trust that's knowingly or intentionally exceed the manufacturer's limits rather than accidentally.

That was a clarification I should have requested, come to think of it Graeme. However, we were walking specifically talking of 4wd'ing at the time, but it doesn't hurt to be 100% clear.
