Hahaha oh come on you gotta get into it they love it!! Plus the I think the second turbo hardly works until they swap over at about 2600rpm.
Only Landy people would understand but a farmer mate was having a perve under the car for his own reasons and came out from under saying there was some weeping in both front axles near the brakes. So I duly reported this at the next service and they reported they found leaking round a hose. Ordered the part in and back it went in for the install. No sooner got back to the office and they called me saying they found things they did not like in the turbo; come and get it and bring it back when the parts come in.
When it was new it blew too much smoke while under a thrashing (which it rarely gets) and was using too much oil. The standard upgrade happened, both problems went away to my satisfaction. But not to LR apparently so a new turbo. It's the old oil blow back issue.
I asked if the fact I drove like a Nanna had anything to do with it? He didn't think so. He said light work would not cause a problem but might make defective seals from manufacture etc reveal themselves.
This is a fairly common replacement operation, I would expect that they would have kicked the butt of the supplier by 2012 but there you go.
So, the car has a pretty easy life, no peak hour, just tootling around on weekends interspersed with frequent country highway drives. Knowing this I do give it a beating every month (foot flat and hang on) on a quiet straight road. But I'm wondering if the car is actually too awesome for me! Food for thought for those contemplating whether to spend for the extra KW?
I'm now thinking the McLaren PC12 might not be a good match if I win lotto. Can't even seem to keep my SDV6 satisfied. Bit embarrassing really.

If the McLaren doesn't float your boat when that lotto win happens (do they actually sell them over here yet?) then don't get a Ferrari 458 either - I've just read a review in EVO magazine, the guy who owns the car uses it for a driving experiences company he owns and has replaced the EPB 4 times in 50K miles!! Makes the disco EPB look long lived...
How do we classify Too much smoke from a LR diesel?
Last service they said to me that they changed some seal due to excessive smoke, however i never thought it was that much, and I am obsessive with these types of things. I would say when i put the boot in it produces as much as it did before hand.....
Just wondering how the too much is gauged
Jaybee, when I first got the car and I planted it, a big cloud of smoke would appear noticeable in the rear view mirror. I thought it was too much, especially taken alongside the three notches of oil used reading the gauge. So in it went for the upgrade and since then it only used one notch in 6 months. I was cool with it. It blew some smoke when given the welly but an acceptable amount given my usual sedate driving. IMO.
Don't really know the answer to your question. They are diesels after all. Perhaps I'll have a better idea when I plant it with this new turbo and see how much "acceptable" is.
Are you using oil? They might not have been pleased with that and gone looking on yr car.
I wonder if the oil goes out the exhaust and possibly effects oxygen sensors in the exhaust??
I saw a pristine white D4 in Williams a couple of weeks ago.The tailgate was covered in black soot.Do the D4s have twin exhaust outlets???? the black looked like it had come from each corner.

Yep, D3/4 has twin outlets.
Another vote for the V8 there Andy ... no soot ... no smoke unless something is (very seriously) broken ... and I'll be --> back in my box ...
I have owned a few Ford V8s,even put one in a Ser3 Landy, love the noise, may have trouble keeping demerit points under control.
There is a pimped up overpriced HSE that I may look at over here, too much bling????.
