Hello all, I have had a look through this site but have not been able to find a response to my present issue. I can't believe that I am the only one to have had this issue. Could this be a first?
Essentially, we have are about to pick up an Evernew caravan to replace our little Utlimate. The Evernew is a lot heavier unit and when loaded will be near the D4's max download (towball) and tow weight. We aren't too worried about that as we wont be doing any more big laps.
What I am writing about now is by issue with hooking the safety chains up.
The 2 Tonne bow shackles or D shackles or their pins wont fit through the casting on the OEM tow arrangement.
That has forced me to use 2 by 1.5 tonne D shackles (rated). Not ideal but I'm not aware of a solution.
This was not an issue with the Ultimate.
I have this vision of a 3 tonne plus van jumping off the towball and the van putting alternating massive forces on the respective 1.5 tonne shackles and all of what is left of my hair stands up.
Or...am I worrying about nothing?
And...although I have some of Gordons 18" rims with BFG All Terrains as spares for when we want to get cross, my daily tyres are an excellent Michelin road tyre on 19" rimsand I wonder how I can tell if they are going to be Ok as a tow tyre.
Fabulous resource this. Love reading the questions and answers.
Regard
Steve L.

When I've got a moment I'll do a search as this has been done before with all sorts of opinions. For my two cents worth 2x1.5t is fine. If you want a laugh have a look at what LRA put in with the tow kit, it is a spring loaded carabiner with no load rating, so how do they get away with that?

I attach the shackles to the rear recovery point for towing 3.5 ton. There was a report on here somewhere way back of the holes in the tow bracket breaking out when a trailer came unhitched. Since then have used the recovery point.

You could alway purchase a Mitch hitch and then you can have big rated shackles...I use rated 3.2 tonne on each side.

Hey Rufusking,
The Carabiner was NEVER meant to be a "D" Shackle replacement.
It is only to hold the Bag the tow kit gets stored in, Then clipped to the rear tie down points.

SupporterIt is amazing how many people want a clip lock/karabiner all unrated to hook their $70 k van onto their $90k tow vehicle .
USE rated shackles and make sure the chain fitted to the towed vehicle is rated.
It will have stamp on the chain
