Rotary Gear Selector Failure MY 14 Disco

Last week whilst on first day of our holiday to SA Flinders Ranges the Rotary Gear Selector in my new (April 2014) Disco jammed in down position and remained stuck in Drive and could not be re-started. We were at Stirling North 7kms south of Pt Augusta at a holiday cabin park en route to Horseshoe Ranges (south east of Quorn). After 8hrs and 7 phone calls with LR assist (7 different advisors mind you) it was towed away on a flat-bed truck back to Adelaide -the nearest LR dealer. This was after the local LR assist contracted mechanic tried a hard reset which did not help. The remainder of our holiday was completed in a hired Toyota Hilux dual cab 2WD mining ute -complete with orange flag & roof top flashing light!

The LR dealer assessment is a failed gear selector module (mine is apparently the first Discovery to have this problem). A new one is on special order from the UK as none available in Australia. Will be 5-10 days. Before purchase I was slightly skeptical about the rotary gear selector (I liked the gear shift in my previous D3). This little "event" hasn't exactly won me over!! Hopefully this is a one off rare event. I'll post an update once I get it back. David
PS: I should add the local LR dealer has been most sympathetic and I have no issues with them at all.

I hope it is a one off event too, Blue C. The rotary gear knob has been around for a while in the Evoque hasn't it? Here's hoping your back on the road real soon.

Did you try use it in the lowered position? Manual says this is possible if it fails to raise.

Sorry, forgot it's been diagnosed with failed module; however out of interest did you try?

I'm pretty sure I read about this failure on disco3.co.uk - caused by something like a diode failing... certainly not a "one off".

Yes I did - In fact I managed to get it into Drive but when I stopped a short time later I couldn't get it out of Drive (not even into Neutral or Reverse) and there it stayed all day! It couldn't be re-started after turning off engine; locking/unlocking car several times didn't work, nor did a hard re-set. I connected the Hawk eye fault finder and no transmission faults found. I suspected (although found it hard to believe with just 4,200kms on odometer) that there was a terminal issue with the gear selector. After sitting around all day my frustrated 12yo daughter suggested it would have been good if I had kept the D3!! (point conceded on this 1 occasion).

I haven't seen that thread although I did find a You Tube video of UK guy with a RRS 2012 with stuck rotary dial and reference to Jags having this problem in 2008- however the latter was supposedly resolved. I'll try and find out from my LR dealer if they actually identify a specific cause. I accept it's unlikely to be a "one off" but I am hoping the replacement module lasts a fair while!

There is a service action for :-
    Model Years: 2013 - 2014
    Vin Range: LA691530 - LA700560
    Service Action Q355.
If your VIN falls within this range then it may only be a download issue.

If the vehicle didn't start after the switch dropped down then you may have another issue.

    Cheers

    Thanks Pete
My VIN number is outside that range. My dealer has advised it was a rotary gear selector module failure but I did wonder initially if a software issue could have been to blame. It certainly would have been an easier fix! Regards, David

On the Evoque (not sure about the D4), if you switch on the ignition (press start without your foot on the brake), and hold the "shift-up" paddle for 20 ~ 30 seconds, the rotary dial will raise. This may not work if the module has other faults than just raising the dial, but it's worth a try.

    Cheers,

    Gordon
