    Blown Turbo

MY10 rrs started to blow smoke and using oil.
Drivers side turbo blown body off to replace.
Quoted two prices for turbo $2200 and $4500 the cheaper price was for a factory reconditioned unit although the dealer didn't mention this in fact two dealers didn't offer the brand new part?
There seems to be some modifications that have to be carried out when fitting the turbo, making an expensive job even more so
A classic piece of British engineering, shame they are such nice cars.

Do you know if the modified turbo oil drain had been fitted? If not then I have to wonder if the original convoluted drain contributed to or even caused the failure. If the modification being done now is the fitting of the new drain direct to the sump then obviously it hadn't previously been done.

    Hi Graeme

They are fitting the drain to the sump
I thought it strange that this had to be done.
Was this problem with this model?

The 3.0 was built with a scavenger pump for the drain from the 2nd turbo. Jaguar dispensed with this after having troubles with oil not getting away quickly enough under some circumstances that resulted in lots of burnt oil to varying degrees. LR initially retained the use of the scavenger pump that also resulted in lots of replaced turbos, sometimes several on the same vehicle blaming faulty turbo seals but eventually capitulated and started fitting the direct drain to new vehicles and to those where the owners complained of an oil burning issue.

My 3.0 D4's original turbo had already been replaced due to oil accumulation and burning after the 2nd turbo hadn't been used for a while but the problems started again after warranty expired. I started to push for another warranty replacement because the original problem returned but buying the kit and fitting it myself cost me less money, time and hassles, although not a quick task and moreso due to everything being covered in dirt. Of note was the significant volume of oil in the original drain pipe when it was removed to fit the new one.

What year did LR first start to fit the direct drain to new vehicles?

    Hello All,

I have a MY11 SDV6 SE and had some oil usage issues.
I had it serviced a couple of weeks ago and they said,
"Turbo drain pipe was blocked and leaking, removed and replaced"
I hope it was replaced with the new Drain Design.

I lost count on my MY10 ... at least three turbo changes in the first 18 months or so .... but then it was sweet after that until I sold it at 4.5 years old.

Having a MY13 now, I was hoping this issue has been well sorted. Fingers crossed.

I've had a number 2 turbo replaced and that was after the drain upgrade failed to do the job. This was noted by the dealer incidentally, after the drain upgrade I was satisfied. So it has been done and all is good but I hear of multiple failings and this is the one issue that makes me tempted to pay the stupid price for the extended warranty.
