    Absolutely correct, but when the mood takes you, its good to give it bit of a workout using the paddles too.

    I find in mountain roads where you really want to hold a gear the paddles are great, and off road when you want to a gear for crawling.

    I have though that the 8 speed is so smooth, there is rarely any need. In timed speed zones it is useful for a little engine breaking as I use cruise control a lot in those zones.

    For highway or road overtaking the auto is faster to react than me so the panels can leave you under geared as these new D4s with the 3lt v6 can pull really well and I find that during overtaking I want all eyes of the road and the gap and not on the tacho.

    I love my Zr 8 speed with D - DS and paddles, I don't miss a manual box at all.

    No new advice here, just wanted to say.

    Agree there the 8spd box is really great so silky smooth just really nice and it never feels like there are to many gears it just works so well.

    I find if there is a smaller gap to over take i will have it back to 6th right in the torque band ready to feed it in and go when it comes time to go.

    But probably 95% of the time its easy just to let the car do it, or as you say when you have a bit of a range where engine braking is needed its also helpful.

    I just find a slight increase of pressure with the right foot is enough to kick my sports from 110 to about 130 in a few seconds.
    In sports mode the surge of power is amazing but mine is the SDV8 so has a huge amount of torque

    Agreed, we test drove that engine and it is a BEAST! I can't think how they could possibly get any more grunt out of that diesel V8...awesome.;
