    Engine Sound Deadening - 2.7 TDV6

    Hi all,

The sound deadening on the underside of the plastic engine cover on my D3 has completely disintegrated. I am wondering what effect this actually has on the noise of the engine? Does anyone have much experience with this?

If it does make a noticeable difference I was thinking about glueing some after market sound deadening to this cover, or buying a complete new one. Land Rover have quoted me $140 for a new engine cover with the sound deadening (haven't shopped online yet). I imagine the after market ones may actually be superior and cheaper.

Am I wasting my money? Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Cheers,

    Matt

Mine disintegrated after mice chewed portions of it away when on a trip to South Australia. Havnt bothered to do anything with it,its been anout 5 years without it doesnt seem to effect anything so i am not going to replace it. Proberly allows more air flow around the motor which isnt a bad thing. Cheers

Got a sheet of closed cell foam with foil backing from Clark Rubber, cut it to fit. Fire retardant too.

Take it off and leave it off, be very minimal difference, and you can keep your eye on the plastic water housing at the front in case it starts to leak. I don't like not being able to see the engine and any issues that engine covers tend to hide.

Took mine off 1 week after we bought the car and it certainly isn't very noisy in my opinion.

I did exactly what CaverD3 did and mine has been there for 5 years so far, so good...

If you want to spend the $140, be prepared to replace it in 3-4 or so years unless the quality of the foam has improved.

    Hi Leigh,

I am thinking along your lines. Do you remember if it made any difference in reducing engine noise?

Yes it made a big difference to the sound at idle.

I think the LR foam reacts with diesel.
