Urgent help - Multiple critical faults on D3

    Hi All,

Currently on the road (Wednesday 1:30pm 12th November) and experiencing multiple critical fault messages:

    "Engine System Fault"
"Transmission - Limited number of gears available"
    "Park Brake Fault"
    "HDC fault"

Other various warning lights have lit up as well. Turned car off and back on, fault clear, only for them to re-appear 1KM down the road.

Have had it towed to nearest town (Bendigo).

Does anyone know what could cause such a wide range of critical faults?

    regards,
    Paul

First thing - check your battery.
D3 / D4 and RRS are very susceptible to all manner of faults if the battery voltage is low.

    Then alternator.
A hard reset may also help.

RACV checked and passed both battery and alternator.

How does one do a hard reset? What are the implications of doing so?

    Thanks,
    Paul

Firstly turn off vehicle, apply handbrake, wait for handbrake light to go out on instruments, this means that the computers have all shut down.

Hard reset is done by disconnecting both battery terminals -ve first ON ALL BATTERIES IN THE VEHICLE. I personally cover both terminals as well, with a bit of rag. Then use a piece of metal to touch the 2 disconnected leads together, being sure not to touch the battery terminals at all. Leave connected for 30 seconds or so. Remove metal bar used to bridge leads, connect leads to terminals and see how the vehicle behaves. This drains residual current from computers and can reset spurious faults.

Oh and disconnect an Auxiliary battery from the main battery if you have one!

    Several things come to mind:

    * low battery/poor earth
    * faulty rear brake light bulb (ONLY use LR globes!)
    * faulty brake switch (above the brake pedal)

Above are most likely, but could be a variety of things - difficult to tell without fault codes.

    Cheers,

    Gordon

Got it road to Bendigo (nearest town) where it was checked and found to be a faulty fuel pump. Towed back to Melbourne ($660) and dropped off at Melbourne LR - expected cost to replace around $3.5k.

    Ouch

    Which fuel pump?

I would be surprised if it was.

It might be worth checking that they have looked at the brake switch/ bulbs etc and the other matters referred to below first.

Melbourne LR are good but an issue with my D4 was misdiagnosed there. It ended up with them replacing a starter motor unnecessarily. Not a huge issue for me as it was done under warranty.

Across the industry, there seems to be a general trend toward replace parts first and ask questions later.
