    the reliability curve.

    good morning gentlemen, and ladies.

deliberating on a purchase of diesel disco 3. current ride is NL pajero. great old girl but time to go.

have admired disco 3 for years. off road ability. class. solidity. simple yet assured looks. not to mention wee bit of luxury.

for family camping trips. east coast national parks. sand and mountains.

heres the rub: budget allows for discos with some mileage, 150-180 k

my question for you guys who i've noticed generally tell it how it is. no BS.

At what mileage do problems start to spike? caveat: regularly serviced, cared for, reasonable off road use.

a very general question i know, but are your disco 3's quite good up to 200k or 250k, 350k or 160k before things start going pear shaped.

    any advice is much appreciated.

'05 V8 HSE no probs so far

Bought after RACQ inspection with just under 220k now just over 250k .. has all the fruit and has only had an alternator change which was not actually malfunctioning - it was just warning that it may malfunction, so I replaced it.
No other issues so far just servicing and add petrol and go.
Chose V8 as its my personal belief they are cheaper to run over 100k.
Best HSE sound - everything just does what it should. Full 3 row aircon voice activated sound and sat nav, alpine roof, Kaymar rear bar, quiet, smooth, great off road (with correct tyre pressure).
    Mate - go for it

diesel v V8. an endless topic of debate im sure. i always thought the diesels would just keep going and going.
do people get over 300km out of the V8?

not too many for sale. aim to buy in the new year.

    Kms Life expectancy V8?

No Idea? but its going strong as at 250k

I hope it has no prob's doubling that? time will tell.

search google on the V8 and the TDV6 faults or problems (separately) and there is a significant difference.
TD's claim there are more of them so potentially should have more of - BUT I struggle to find more than 1 or two V8 specific issues and the first 2 I found were the same bloke - and most seem to be with GAS fitting issues. = don't fit gas = problem solved.

The V8 has a reputation of being a solid beast of a donk.

but apart from that its a gem to drive.

    good luck deciding.

My MY06 D3 V6 4.0lt petrol had 244,000 and had a few issues under warranty with only 80,000 on the clock. (power steering pump replaced and air compressor for suspension). But was nothing but smooth sailing right through till the day I got the D4.

I do 60% highway driving. Averaged 15.6l/100km. On official figures the V8 was more economical than the V6. The D4 and the 3.0lt diesel has so much power and torque.

    Hi Pinko001,
I have had three TDV6's and have now moved into a V6 petrol, I found that the TDV6 had a few things that I didn't like, timing belt (repair / replacement), EGR valves (replacement), exhaust location over the gearbox , plastic water outlet problems (all my own experiences) tales of components that fall apart on the front of the engine, as per this forum not my own experience.
I weighed up the price difference, I found a petrol V6 significantly cheaper than a TDV6 same spec apart from the engine with slightly more klms, I'm now more than happy, I'm getting a regular, 12.8 to 13.0 l/100klms, smooth, torquey motor, same comfort, only thing I don't like is the Alpaca coloured inside trim, gets grubby and doesn't look the best. That's got nothing to do with the engine.
Don't be put off buying a petrol. One thing I might be looking at is a LR tank, might be. Saying that I fitted one to my TDV6 as well to get better range.

    gday nomad. appreciate your thoughts.

if i was a number cruncher id weigh up the initial cost. cost of repairs. depreciation. fuel cost. life expectancy. resale value. but im not one of those.

the v6 seems to get a bad rap. thirsty and a wee bit sluggish having to lug the tonnes. v8 almost as fuel efficient with the extra grunt.

the initial prices are quite significant.

does my head in. why dont LR decide which is the best engine and just give us that? like it or lump it.

i have been put off buying a petrol 6 before, nomad. the main question is, will i regret getting a petrol 6 in the long run? if going petrol, why not the 8, as steve says.

could just get another pajero and be done with it.

so many d3's, of all donks, for sale in WA. why cant they be in nsw. damn.

All of the engines are very good in their own way I believe. The V6 has the most off the line torque and worst fuel economy, the TDV6 has the most overall torque and best fuel economy, the V8 has the most power and is quickest and sounds the best and does like a drink if you drive it hard. If you want range but a TD, if you want speed and general awesome V8, if you don't care and just want Disco awesome with a low entry price, buy a V6.

You could buy a Pajero, but I will share this story - a couple of years ago my Disco shamed itself (wheel bearing) when I was at the snow and had to be taken to Canberra for repairs. Thanks to the excellence that is NRMA Premium Care I was taken with the Disco to Canberra and given a brand new Pajero (mid-spec) to drive for a week until I passed back thru Canberra. Paj is a very honest and nice vehicle and I was happy enough with it for a week ... although I could pass on the whole "engage 4wd thing" and massive handfuls of understeer when pressed and obnoxious engine and wind noise (etc) ... I was very pleased to get back into my Disco at the end of the week ... and after about 3 seconds I forgave it the wheel bearing transgression ... compared to a brand new Paj, my 7 (at the time) year old Disco is a massively better car in every respect ... quieter, quicker, far better on road handling, far more space, far better ergonomics ... anyway good luck either way !

I'd also add that recently I have been on a car buying adventure to replace one of our other vehicles - I made a massive mistake driving the Disco to look at and drive other brand new vehicles. Suffice it to say my view was that they all sucked compared to the Disco except for a newer Disco and a Rangie ... maybe slightly biased, but seriously the features I take for granted are in short supply in many new vehicles ... and no vehicle I saw has cupholders that are even close to as excellent as a D3.
