Not accustomed to pulling a heavy load I don't know much about the power but the 3.0's torque and low-down flexibility is lovely.

One thing to look for in a V6 Ford motor is that the oil has been changed more often than recommended.

They have 3 timing chains, 1 of which are at the back of the motor.

If oil changes are too infrequent or poor oil used they stretch and I would think it would be a body off to fix.
I wouldn't buy one over about 80Kk and even then I would be asking questions about how often the oil was changed.

Here is a video in Spanish ( I think) which shows all the special tools necessary which are lots. I wonder how many LR dealers would have them?

BTW the good thing is an Explorer engine is the USA is AFAIR USD 2300 from a dealer. They are probably one of the oldest blocks still going , having started as the Cologne V6 back in 1965.

    Hi Pinko001,
I seem to buy my D3's just as they need the timing belts changed, lets just put this down as pure good luck. That HP fuel pump belt is an absolute b!tch to get to, I was on the verge of cutting the fire wall out to get better access.

Maybe the statement was a bit rash, I would definitly consider the later 3.0 engine I don't hear as much about that one and I base my judgement on my own personal experience. I would have kept my RRS if I had been able to buy more accesories for it than a set of floor mats, that was a nice ride..........

gday nomad. i have been persuaded by the wise heads here to leave the 4 l petrol aside. for all its qualities a sense of being underpowered may nag away.

looking nervously at the number on the till in the local caltex rules out the robust and meaty v8.

the cost for a timing belt change may be negotiated off the purchase price as the hefty cost and importance is widely known. ie, a significant barrier to selling an unwanted car.

just been showing the minister of finance a few d3's. i think shes coming around. had to show her a few pajero's as well. she really likes the back seat video screens standard in the exceeds. (the thought of 2 entranced kids for 2 hrs anyway).

    then, i show her a d4! 5 g extra. similar kms. hmmmm.

    anyway. the saga will continue.

to answer my original question would i be right in saying that there is no hyperbolic curve as such. more of a gentle line. so long as it (all engines-esp diesel) is serviced to within an inch of its life, using top shelf oil. it should be driven sensibly and wary of early signs of problems, in which case jump on it?

apart from that, a 2.7 tdv6 should be good for at least 350 000km. the front wishbones may need changing at some point. usual 4wd problems exist apart from these issues. 2009 is more refined than 2005 model. d4s are prettier inside but have largely the same drivetrain and go forward electronics.

jon3950 is right. ther is no other way to buy some wheels. no amount of logic can account for the weird breakdowns and snafus most people experience. besides, can buy the worlds best 4wd and get his by a bus crossing the road to it. or having a coffee in martin place...

    its only money.

noticed lots and lots of patrols selling on car sales for 30-35k. robust and roomy but not in the same league for my needs. disco all the way.

thanks for everyone's input. much appreciated. merry xmas.
