    torque converter

Hey all iv taken my disco 3 on holidays from perth to adelaide to see the rellies. But on the way the revs on the taco started to go up and down especailly when i had it in cruise control
Iv since read that my torque converter has probably crapped its self.

I only just got the oil changed before i left so it seems abit weird cause they say the fix can be changing the oil.

So i think maybe they havent put enough oil in maybe. I dont know the full history of the car it could have been towing its whole life. Its done 150000 and 2800 since the oil change iv had it about a year. There was nothing wrong with gear changes before the oil change.

So the thing i cant find on the net is where the filler plug is so that i can have a check. And how far could i drive pulling a trailer in this condition cause i do need to get back to perth.

    Try this to check http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/6-r...3/topics/46749

You could drive the car shifting manual to get where you need to go. What fluid did they replace with? Was it lifeguard or something else? Did you have torque shudder prior to changing oil? How heavy is the trailer?

Im not sure what oil they put in but if it was low and i needed to fill it up that would be something i would have to find out. Cause of holidays they are not open.

There was no shuddering before the oil change the only reason i did it was because i though it was going to be hot coming over and the transmission had never been done so that was the only reason why.

Im pullling a camper trailer which probably weighs about 1200kg

    Hi Flaps,
Who changed the oil? Southerns, Barbagallo, Rovertech? These guys know what to use and how to top the oil up, indys might not be as up there with the procedures. The filler / level plug is on the R/H side of the gearbox towards the back above the splitline of the pan. Level ground, gearbox oil temp must be between 30 and 50 degrees C, suspension in high mode, engine running and take the plug out both slowly and carefully. I've got some LG6 in the shed, however being in Adelaide this isn't much use to you. The agencies should be open tomorrow you should be able to find either a Repco or ZF agent.

My revs did the same as yours, tended to be up and down around the 1500 to 1750 mark, in cruise and out of cruise, since I have changed the oil it has done the revs up and down a coupe of times over a period of about five minutes, the rest of the time the vehicle has run really well. I certainly don't have the torque convertor down as "buggered". I only did a partial change and changed from a standard filter to a steel pan, I have nearly done 10,000 klms since the oil change and going to do another one at 20k, I'll get the oil analysed again and see whare I am at and go from there. Enjoy you holiday..........

Im going to have a look tomorrow i hope isn't buggered. I wont say who it is they are normal very good but they are very buzy so i hope they didnt forget to top up or something simple.

Driving in manual mode does help no jumping of the revs even in cruise control thanks for the advice.

There is no point measuring the oil level if its temp is not between 30 and 50 degrees C.

The oil MUST be in this temp range.
