Which engine does it have? The 3.0 has a vacuum operated valve in the inlet for the secondary turbo whose lever can jam from grit between the lever and the valve body. This is quite easy to clear once you know how to do it.

Does the engine seem to have reduced power? Some faults don't trigger reduced power mode even when a message says otherwise.

If a 3.0, were you towing using cruise control at highway speeds on hills? If yes then it may need an ECM software update as early 3.0s had a bug that LR didn't think it necessary to ensure that all vehicles were updated.

What code reader has been purchased? If a generic one then it probably wont help.

I stopped using Bendigo Mazda a few years back - the Land Rover head mechanic had moved into the office, and the workshop just kept turning out sub standard work. For me the rot started with it taking six weeks to do my D2 clutch, and a heap of issues after. In Bendigo Neville Briggs is very good, but I don't know what diagnostic gear he has. We are in Kyabram and take our D3 to Albury - the guys at Blacklocks are great.....

    Thanks guys.
Well the scanner hasn't arrived. It's a cheap generic scanner so perhapse won't help by the sounds.?..
The car is a 2010 D4 HSE so the 3.0.. Interested in this issue of grit Graeme. Youtube?
No, I wasn't towing, just accelerating and at about 90km/hr, turbo probably active, power dropped and light came on. Message reads 'engine systems failure'. It doesn't specifically say that it's restricted performance, and I havnt been game to start it (is it safe?) since bringing it home on the day it happened. Havn't even been game to try the hard reset tho I probably need to man up and give that a go!
Have gone off Bendigo Mazda- thanks for the advice- might try my local bloke ben Doherty, or Neville Briggs perhaps on that advice.
Racv only gets me 100km of towing so cant get it to a 'real' dealer..

I've got a nanocom with the canbus function on it. It's supposed to work on all vehicles with the can bus system.
We can try it out this arvo of you like?

Try restarting it for sure. If the fault is permanent then the message will still be displayed. Its not as though you're going to be driving it foot to the floor and even if you tried, engine management wont allow it without all sensors and plausibility algorithms indicating that there is no longer a fault.

Unfortunately the AULRO gallery isn't currently operational as I posted some pictures of the inlet isolation valve whose lever can stick although I more suspect the ecm software fault from your descriptions.

Could it be a stuck egr valve?
It seems the fault occurred whilst under load when the motor had just got up to temperature.
Also, do those intercooler hoses tend to delaminate?

    So..
Thanks Benji for the attempted scan and brainstorm.
car towed by Racv 100km to romsey where Daniel was very helpful.
Daniel has cleared the code and did some investigation for only a small charge, and I've done 150kms today with no repeat, touch wood.
    Apparantly the codes were:
    - Id run it out of fuel recently (not true, tho we did get close recently, sat down to 30km left. Fill up was still several liters off the stated tank capacity).
    - engine ECU memory error - cause unknown.
Daniel said if it happens again, I may be looking at a new engine ecu, approx quote $1500 including latest software, plus labor.
Any comments appreciated (Grahame, is this still consistant with your theory? Should I take it down to a dealer to get a preventative software upgrade perhapse?
    Thanks again to all

IMO definitely worth ensuring that the ecm s/w is at the latest level.
