I changed my oil today via suction pump, like I always do.

    1. Fit suction tube and give the unit a few pumps (about 10)
    2. Remove filler cap and top engine cover
    3. Find 34mm socket and back off oil filter
    4. Check other fluids in the engine bay then a few more pumps on the sucker.
    5. Remove oil filter, change cartridge, and refit and a few more pumps to get the last of the dregs in the sump.
10ish minutes gone by and not dirty yet, except hands.

Normally at this point I would measure and pour 5 litres of oil in and check levels etc but I had my car set up on the hoist so up she went and I pulled the sump plug.

Not even a drip came out of the hole not a even a tiny little run down the face of the sealing surface, my cup to catch and measure the oil was useless.

The sump plug is actually about 10mm above the bottom of the sump and my guess is that the evacuation tube is slightly lower.

That's the last time I worry about getting that last bit of sludge out by pulling the sump plug!

That's awesome, and vindication that it's as effective, if not more effective than the messy traditional method. Thanks for that!

Should it not be 5.9 litres of oil after an oil change ?

Probably yes but I put in 5.0 and then check it usually I end up adding about 500ml more, but it is easier to add a bit than to take a bit out.

For the 2.7D is the consensus to use the dipstick pipe or to run a tube down the dipstick pipe if you vacuum extract? I take it the D4 is designed to extract from the very bottom of the sump.

That engine was probably not designed for oil vacuum extraction.

You would have to make sure you got to the lowest part of the sump whatever way you go.
I drain mine, then i know it is all good,

Could you not make a hole in the sump guard to access the plug
Not knowing the lay out of said car it just seems logical to me

A few years back I was in a Toyota main dealer (they were separating a gearbox and transfer for me) and I was shocked to see a suction pump being used, it was quite a big one going to a large drum. So main dealers use them for sure..
