No need to apologise - it was just my observation how the thinking process develops in these situations. You just keep getting used to a figure and then spring forward from that, thinking it is not that much more, but you never look back at the figure that you started with in the first place to realise what you are getting yourself into
I would dearly love the 183kW/600Nm engine, but it may be a bit of overkill if the 155kw/520Nm will be more than adequate for our needs.

I'll certainly look into that as I now have the time to do that sort of stuff myself
How do you dispose of the old oil? Tip facility?

Scott - I was assuming an average of 10ltr/100kms overall - ie over the full annual kms that we do of 30k - 35k which obviously is not all done towing the van. Maybe 30% to 40% of that would be towing (just a guess btw)

However even so, from what you are saying with your experience, it seems that I am being a bit optimistic.

Also, the sticky thread about spares for remote area travelling is excellent. http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/...ng-spares.html

I believe that with this sort of preparation (including diagnostic tool), you're as well setup for touring as anyone in any modern 4WD, probably better than most actually.

Hope that helps. I don't worry about the ignorant "Land Rover's are unreliable and expensive" sheep. I just get on with enjoying the best.

    Cheers,
    Scott
Thanks Scott - very useful information!

Had my D4 now for three years. Had a Patrol 3.0 for 14 years before that but after a grenade I got the D4. I have done 86000km and not a worry. It is the most comfortable car to drive and is kind to my wife's arthritis.
I get an oil and filter done every 13000k and normal service at 26000k. It costs roughly the same as the Patrol every 5000k per annum. Insurance with CommInsure is 875 pa.
To say I am happy with my Landrover is an understatement. I am ecstatic.

Another interesting point that is emerging from your responses regarding insurance - it is the same or less than what I am paying for the Patrol which is nearly 11 years old! So much for the "hearsay experts" out there who claim that the parts for a LR are very expensive. if they are, then why is the insurance not more expensive

My insurance premiums are cheaper with my D3 than what they where with my old 97 80 series land cruiser.

On the fuel use, my current average is 13.4L/100km with the 2.7L TD, I haven't had my D3 long and thats averaged over just under 10,000km

Haha yeah totally understand I've done the same myself ill just jump up to this model then jump up another one and your dead right you look back where you started and haha its a big difference either way you will love it they are a bloody beautiful car and as everyone has said they are minimal issues and dont listen to anyone who tells you other wise as these people generally have never owned one and are going off 5th hand stories from a mates mate and so forth.

We did the equation the other way around and bought ourselves a 2011 D4 3L and we are picking up a van this year

We went from a Navara D40 to the D4 and the Disco is just sensational. Im a bore who does tons & tons of homework before buying a vehicle (about 12 months or so cause I hate buying cars). Anyway, we wanted it to tow a van around Australia, on & off road, reliable, frugal (cheap servicing, insurance, fuel, etc) and the D4 was miles ahead of the pack.

    Looking at my accounts
    - D40 services - $400-$595 Disco $377-600 (but less of them)
    - D40 insurance - $479 Disco $698

Dont have numbers for fuel but anecdotally Disco is cheaper.

Drove a RR with the 2.7 and very impressed with the power but lucked onto a 3L D4 and didn't hesitate.

Tows well, rides well - permagrin and the best choice.
