I'd steer clear of the 6/7 hour place unless they're quoting the time for both sides.

Does the price include a wheel alignment as I expect it would be needed because I suspect the old bearing couldn't be extracted with the knuckle in-situ.

Good point, no one suggested a wheel alignment and yes the knuckle comes off to press.
Cheapest quote turns out to be the actual official dealer ? By quite a bit, but they don't have anything in stock and one of the independents has a bearing on the shelf and can do it on Friday so it's booked in there, he was not that much dearer, will ask about the alignment then, his personal car is a D3.

This has got very noisy very quickly, OK over 3 weeks but only around 250klms. If it started out bush doubt I would have got home, bit of a worry, no it has not stopped yet, but not prepared to keep using it, and I maintained a fleet of vehicles for quite a while in the N.T. so have a fair idea of mechanics and how long to trust something.

Yes, wheel bearings can sound a bit noisy for a long time but once they get loud they can spit the dummy quite quickly.
