Using a Diesel LR tank on a petrol engined vehicle

    Hi There,
I have asked this question as part of another thread which I suspect it might get lost in not being a specific question in the thread and I was hijacking someone else's thread.

All the long range tanks I have seen advertised specify them as auxiliary diesel tanks, no mention of petrol. Is there any legalities using a long range diesel tank in petrol service before I fit the tank?

Does this vary state to state?

Any rules about the amount of fuel?

Without being funny I would prefer factual answers not something heard from your aunties best friends father-in-law sort of thing. Thanks in anticipation.

I have had auxiliary tanks on a V8 before. Have you contacted any of the auxiliary tank manufacturers for their opinion? I am sure the credible suppliers would be aware of the legalities of fitting long range tanks. A lot of the suppliers don't even specify the fuel, they just state it is an auxiliary fuel tank and the same companies sell tanks for the Range Rover Classic.

You can fit external auxiliary petrol tanks - a few of the V8 owners on here have done it in the usual spare wheel area.

Internally you can't fit petrol tanks.

    Cheers,

legally in NSW your required a engineer inspection or an approved kit.
Im assuming its for a ULP discovery.

evaporative petrol emission will technically require some sort of vapour collection system.it must be sealed system. diesel has no requirement.

had discusion about using diesel in japanese factory petrol tanks and fuel lines.the diesel can react with the internal protective coating. so the coating in the tank is different. discovery I have has a plastic fuel tank.

petrol tanks can always be used to store diesel not so the other way around.

    very generally.

an external tank can usually be used for petrol IF its breathers and vents are routed back to the main tank or plumbed into the existing pollution control system OR are completely sealed when not being filled.

Most internal tanks are not suited for use with petrol.

    Hi Dave,
Rightly or wrongly after I had some petrol jerry cans pinched off my camper trailer in an out lying area (nuff said) I bought two brand new diesel jerry cans and used them to store petrol, haven't had one taken since. You can take from that what you wish. Not really the subject of the thread however sort of relevant. Thanks for the info.
