Call me slack but when I have changed the oil in my D4 3.0L I have not really measured the amount going in rather I have used the electronic measure thingy on the dash.
Anyhow last weekend I changed the oil and bugger me if the actual oil required to get the dash gauge to say full was almost 12 pints. When the good book says 10 max. Yeah all right, it should be in liters, however I have oil jugs that are measured in pints / quarts. So O.K. they are old!
Anyhow Maggsie is right on the money.
With the oil gauge showing full I can make like a destroyer laying a smoke screen (much exaggeration) which in reality it is the odd puff of blue smoke now and again depending on how fast and far down the loud peddle is depressed.
So my job for tomorrow is to remove a bit (2 pints) of the oil and run with the oil gauge showing at least 2 marks below full knowing that the sump is actually at the correct level.
It's amazing what you learn on this site!

Still smokes on cold start up. I suspect valve stem seal however they say this is unheard of on 3.0SDV6. Which makes me even more convinced that is problem, because if it has never happened before, it will....to me
