Newbie needing help deciding on RRS or disco 4?

Firstly I'd like to express how good this forum site is!! Have spent way too much time on it when I should have been at work/paying attention to the wife, so thanks to everyone for the great info.

Soo. Hopefully I am not going over a previous discussion but I am struggling to decide on a 2010 RRS 3.0l diesel or the 2010 disco 4 2.7l diesel and was hoping to get some advice. I test rode both on the weekend and even though I thought I'd be more into the disco I really enjoyed the RRS and am leaning towards that.

I will be driving highway/city kms for the most part but the whole reason for the purchase is to do beach driving to get to some places up the coast. Even though i thought they were supposed to be the same car, The RRS felt a better drive on the road but my big question Is the RRS capable in the soft sand? Especially with the stock 19" rims and low profile tyres? I have read a bunch about the discovery in the sand , are there any differences with the RRS?

Don't really need the 7 seats but like the practical aspects of the boot and split tail-gate of the disco. How is the RRS on fitting gear in the back?

Thinking of getting the aftermarket 18" rims for higher profile tyres for sand driving and a roof basket for gear but the purchase will send me broke so I think I will have to make do with stock car for a little while.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

G'day mate. You're right, lots of good info here.

I have a RRV on 19" rims. Aired down to 17 or 18psi they are fine on the sand. Just remember to turn off the dynamic stability control DSC. I will hopefully get 18" GOE rims myself one day to allow a better tyre for bush travel.

I can't really comment on the RRS as I've never driven one. However, I've driven a disco 3.0 and 2.7. While both seem a good engine, in a disco the 3.0 is noticeably nicer to drive. The tdv8 3.6 is notch better again. However the sequential turbo 3.0 is probably a more advanced design.

I think the RRS update has a smaller load space, slightly less clearance, but nicer dash layout, compared to a D4.

Not an easy choice. I'd go for a D4 if lower km, as it's probably lots cheaper. I don't really understand the big price variation between the RRS & D4. However, I've never owned a D4 or even driven a RRS.

    Welcome to the forum

Either will be fine, you just have to learn all about them once one enters your life.

Sure the 17's are better in the sand, and rough stuff, but many on here are very happy with 18 or 19's.

We settled for the Disco as we need the room, particularly for remote area travel.Didn't need the 7 seats either.

I was in the same predicament last year when buying a new car RRS or D4, we chose the D4 as it was noticeabley cheaper than a RRS but just for the practical side while we don't Always need the 7 seats they've come in handy a few times not to mention the massive load carrying ability weather picking up a new dining table or a new washing machine the D4 can handle it no problems. While you can tow a trailer with a RRS and do the same job I've just found it so easy with the D4. Either one you will love and I saw a 2011 RRS yesterday Jeeze there still a sexy looking car beautiful shape!!

I had my 2006 D3 for 6 years and traded it in on my 2011 RRS. D3 has significantly better load space (longer wheelbase) and the split tailgate is handy but my RRS is by far the better drive on road. Haven't used the RRS on sand but my D3 did Stockton a number of times and never got stuck. Glides over the sand after air down (14 psi) on tyres and DSC off.
    Both cars bought new.

One is and emotional purchase, and the other is practical one, both are superb and do the job very well.If you want to tow the disco has the longer wheel base, and if you want all the jewelry (bull bars etc) there is more available with the Disco

Thanks guys! The price is about the same but the RRS generally have about 20k more kms on them (70k vs 90k). Although to get the disco se/hse that has the same engine as the RRS i am looking at more $.

Good to know this dilemma has been worked through before

I do like the look of the RRS, they are a sexy car, just worried the extra kms will be a recipe for forking out $$$$ and their ability to get into the soft stuff.

The space I don't think will be a massive issue as I got a mid sized soft roader now and with roof rack I fit all the gear pretty easily. I am a massive fan of the split tailgate with the disco though.

ahhhhh this is a hard pick!

Yeah definitely agree. The RRS definitely had better road manners, and theory should conclude that considering they are basically the same car (d4 and RRS) then they should behave very similar off-road.

Most of my time will be on the road so am leaning towards the RRS, but just don't want to be that guy bellied out on the beach wishing I had gone for a disco

The 2.7 litre diesels have smaller wheels, which allows more deflation and better sand performance. I think the RRS dropped the 2.7 earlier than did the Disco. Which was dropped for 2013. So for sand, IMO, the 2.7 with smaller wheels would be a better option. Hence a 2012 Disco which might still have factory warranty.

If you change from a 19" wheel to an 18" wheel, and then lower the tyre pressure, the tyre increases in length much more with the 18" wheel, equivalent to taking over a tonne less weight out of the 18" wheeled vehicle compared to the 19" wheeled vehicle. So for sand, the earlier ones might make more sense, especially since you are on a budget. A 17" wheel would have more lift again on the sand ...

But there are some great private RRS bargains IMO. When I first started looking, there was a 42,000km diesel V8 local RRS, which the chap sold for around $50k. If you get a good car at a great price, then maybe you can put up with some issues on the sand.
