Yep, i'd stick to the extension cable, and avoid the joiner if possible. The joiner just introduces another point of failure and in my experience, these joiners have been responsible for many network failures where users have decided this would be the best way to extend the range of their computer from the network termination point.

Well, not really. It's probably the smallest job I'll ever do on the D4!
Today I changed the screws in my microphone socket from silver to black - much better!

Very happy with the position of this in the cup holder (thanks Scott) - keeps it out of the way but also lets anyone in first and second rows use the handset.

Can use the cup holders fine and doesn't really obstruct anything.

David what do you think of the IC-450N. Would you recommend it? I have next to no experience with these vehicle mounted CB's. Am only used to handheld Motorola's at work which are worth a small fortune and run encrypted channels.

I've recently installed an icom IC-450 into my disco. Previously I've had GME's but the last 2 have failed to transmit so thought it about time to change brands. The icom is nice and clear and I seem to have better range with the icom - but I also change the antenna as well so that would make a difference there -although the same dB rating between the two and the new one is installed lower.

I was thinking of attaching the antenna to the RWC, mostly because it would be out of line of sight and not as likely to be snapped off.

More than happy with it. Does everything I need it to do. Clear and range is good. I chose it after reading a few positive opinions on here of the 440. I would say though that one of my friends has a similar GME - I can't recall the exact model- and it seems fine too.

I have the GME TX3350 and have found it very good so far but haven't experienced a IC-450N for comparison.

For those that have a platform rack, I ended up with this.
As long as you have enough play left in the cable it can be moved to the side, front, wherever you like. You pull the spring loaded pin out and it can be folded from any position from vertical to flat.

Just a bit of 5mm (overkill) galvanized plate from Bunnings. Drilling out the 16mm hole was the longest part.

Does anybody know the easiest way to get the ethernet cable from under the seat up under the cup holder?

I experimented with going from the cupholder void down and from outside coming up into the void and found that coming from the cupholder void and working down towards the outside edge was easier. It is still somewhat fiddly as things are quite congested under there. I passed a wire down first but that really only identified the general route/direction to get through. I was reluctant to attach the ethernet plug to any draw wire for fear of damage and ended up just wriggling it through with patience. You will see what looks like a small vent right towards the bottom edge of the centre console side wall. This is the area where you'll be able to get the cable to appear.
