    D3 Diesel or Petrol

    Morning all, after a couple of years without a Land Rover in the driveway im heading back to the fold.

    Currently looking at D3's and D4's with the following stipulations (set by SHMBO)

    Straight
    leather interior
    dvd in the back ( yep its gonna be mums bus)

    not decided on Diesel or petrol yet. any suggestions pro's or con's

    Both are great. Depends on how many k's you'll do. Petrol has all the goodies and is less to get into than diesel. Also, if you do your sums, Petrol will be cheaper in the long run if your doing low k's.

    The DVD drives me nuts. The kids wanting to watch it all the time more so! I'd just get tablets for the kids if a good car came up without built in DVD.

    These been a few good threads on pros/cons of D3 vs D4 and diesel vs petrol recently. Here's a couple that are worth a read:

    Timing belt changed (or not) is a big factor for selecting a TDV6.
    And a related issue is the oil pump housing can crack and then the belt tensioner is lost, usually occurs after belt change:

    For both petrol and diesel, the auto transmission is an important thing to check. Looking for a steel pan conversion and evidence of oil/filter changes. Plenty of threads on this subject, including one in the stickies.

    A change/upgrade to the suspension compressor is also a common issue for certain MY's regardless of engine type.

    I think the simplest answer on Petrol vs Diesel is buy the the best condition vehicle you can afford regardless.


    But if range is important to you then Diesel will do a lot better.

    Most here seem to think that if you are going petrol then the V8 is the better option than the 6.

    The D4 are awesome vehicles,love mine.
    As AnD3ew says,if you are going petrol get the V8,the same fuel economy or better than the V6,generally the V8s were all hi spec,ie SE,HSE,and being a V8 nobody wants them as they are gas guzzlers because they are a V8,SHHH dont tell them the petrol V6 is thirstier

    I have the V8 and love it. It depends what driving you are doing and how big are Mum's Blunnys. I can get as bad as 24 L/100km around town when I drag off all the hoons. I can get as good as 11.5 L/100km on the highway on a trip. Average is about 17.5L/100km. Remember that is Premium ULP. about $1.60 here in Townsville.

    17.5L/100km average - ouch. Good to see some honest fuel economy reporting.....I get as bad as 11L/100km when dragging off the Jap diesels (heh heh), average 10, and can get better on a highway run from the TdV6. But I love the optimism of the on-board computer trying to tell me I am averaging under 9 all the time and as low as 8.5.....talk about dishonest reporting.

    But for short runs, a petrol is probably better plus much cheaper to get something with low kms. Plus nothing like a good V8. If you are doing high kms like I do, then you will appreciate the economy and range of the TdV6 and it is not exactly a slouch (almost as good as a remapped Td5 D2)...... 😈
