Hi Andy.
As a general rule when searching you need to use inverted commas around each specific part of the search as well as an operator such as a plus sign or possibly "and", "not", "or" and possibly "near". Depends on how they set up the web site I presume. For example "land rover" and "spare parts". The near operator should pick up the two terms within a reasonable proximity to each other within the same paragraph for example. It's based around Boolean logic. That said I also have trouble with searches as well.

					 For eBay, I get my best mileage out of a search like "Land rover (D4, LR4, Discovery 4)" where the advertisement MUST contain "Land rover" (both with or without the space), and at least one of the terms in brackets. This doesn't work on Gumtree.
