    Turbo Drain Pipe

Had the disco up on the hoist last week, just looking around and I notice a black line on what looks to be a y-piece joining three breather tubes on the starter motor. Wipe with the finger and find it's oil. Looking at what is directly above and see more shiny oil on something that looks like a hose fitting or clamp. Thinking the 'something' (hard to see with the torch I had) may be a turbo and not liking an oil leak at all, I booked it in to get checked out.
Turbo Drain Pipe is reported as the cause.
Sump cover was removed, inspected and secured the drain pipe screws, secured the turbo clamp and booked in for re-inspection in three weeks with customer to monitor.
I thought they had fixed the turbo oil trouble of a few years back. Is this possibly related or different altogether and hopefully just a one off event.
Any hints on what I should keep an eye out for?
    Cheers, Mungus.

This pdf file (attached) of LTB00487v3 may help. It is the 2013 instructions to change the turbo drain pipe to the new design. Perhaps you'll be able to recognise what version drain pipe is on your vehicle.

But the TB does not list a VIN range, perhaps suggesting it's not been fixed for later model years? I've got an MY14 too, so now I'm wondering what drain is actually fitted

    Cheers,
    Scott

Look for the blanking plate attached with 2 screws about 100 mm up from the bottom of the sump. The revised drain is attached to the side of the block higher up and uses only 1 screw in its clamp.

    All good

Inspection done and all good. No more leak.
I asked about the revised drain pipe and interestingly was told mine was fitted with the original and not the smaller revised pipe that is fitted to vehicles only if blowing smoke.
    Cheers, Mungus.

The later drain pipe is not smaller and the only reason for not fitting it would be to save on the kit and its fitting cost.

I think it's strange that the later design has not been fitted as factory to later model years, ie MY13 or 14 onwards. Leaving a known problem with a known design fix in place and only change it if the owner complains of smoke doesn't sound like best practice to me.

Have you checked to see if the revised drain is fitted? I thought that I read that it was fitted to MY14+.

No I haven't. But Mungus has an MY14 so I was assuming based on what he's been told. I will check mine out tomorrow.

V6 of the technical bulletin dated 9/6/15 has a D4 end VIN of DA676456. Engines fitted to later vehicles no longer have the aperture in the sump for the original drain pipe, effective from engine# 0753185.
