Don't have a D4 just yet, but I'm a bit disappointed to read that the air conditioner doesn't remember your preferred setting and defaults to 'fresh air' mode whenever it starts. Is that right? Is there a hack for this? I'm not a fan of inhaling carbon monoxide while I drive.
I seem to recall that there were changes made to the way the HVAC system works in a lot of cars that forced there to be outside air introduced on a timer. This was because the seals were so efficient that CO2 levels were rising inside...
If the above is correct, then it's likely to get fresh air into the cab to help keep the driver awake.

Other than the recirc button, it's also worth noting that the cabin/pollen filter is very good. And there is also an upgraded filter available with activated charcoal that's apparently even better. I'll be getting one of these at some point (just got a new standard filter at the 12M service).

Part number JKR500010 for the plain one and LR023977 for the charcoal one, which supercedes old part number JKR500020.

Thanks for the responses guys. They are all on the money. I did also check with both a dealer and an independent and this is how it is. There isn't a hack that they were aware of either.
...or... if you like tech, you can order the car with pollution sensor which will automatically switch the system to re-circulate when it senses excessive amounts of pollution:
not much help if you don't have the feature!Air recirculation - with pollution sensor
Press the button once to activate air recirculation. Press the button a second time to activate automatic air recirculation. Press the button a third time to switch the system off. In Auto mode, air recirculation is regulated automatically to enable the air-conditioning system to achieve its optimum performance. Air recirculation prohibits the entry of air from outside the vehicle, recirculating the air inside the vehicle instead. This is useful to prevent the entry of traffic fumes. Air recirculation also significantly influences the dehumidifying and cooling performance of the air-conditioning system. Note: The windows can mist up if air is recirculated for a prolonged period.
Cheers,
Sean

I agree, Andy.
I never recirculate CO2 in any car that I own and much prefer fresh air, even with a touch of CO. I just use the auto function, set the temperature to what is comfortable and let the car do its thing. I've never noticed any dust in the dusty outback or exhaust smells in the city but my pollen filter is regularly replaced.
Definitely the best A/C I've ever had in a car.
