    Rotary gear selector heating up

    Hi All,
I'm a newby to LR Discos having just purchased a 2015 D4 TDV6 and have only 10,000k on the clock. Been having a hoot travelling WA Goldfields backtracks, Menzies, Sandstone, Lake Barlee, Mt Elvie rock climbing etc.

But heres the thing, the aluminium rotary gear selector (and surround) occasionally gets hot to touch. The temperature is about the same as holding a cup of tea or coffee, doesn't burn you, but doesn't feel right. It doesn't happen all the time , most of the time the gear selector is as cold as a glass of water, but then it will heat up! After stopping or driving for another hour it will be cold again.
No pattern to it, it doesn't have to be a hot or cold day, Im not towing or driving over tough ground in low range, just gravel roads at 80-100kph. The heat is transferred from somewhere, gear box is the guess.

I haven't had the car long enough for its first service so I haven't talked to the dealer yet.
Does anyone else experience the same? Is this normal?

    Welcome aboard Austin.
    Albania,my favorite place,Im a neighbor,up the road in Williams.
Ive noticed mine gets hot too at times, havent worked out if its from the gearbox, which I doubt as its not fixed to it.I actually think its sunlight that does it,the silver trim on the doors can get warm too.
Try your door trimss next time its hot.
I live behind the Williams Woolshed where the Series Landy is parked if you are ever stretching your legs there and see me yell out I talk to lots of Landy owners in that carpark

    Thanks Andrew,

I dont think its the sun mate, It just too hot for that and I'm fully tinted and never feel any cab heat. I do think that it cools down when the aircon is on with air moving inside the center console? Sometimes it cools pretty fast also on its own, so I cant work it out. Thanks for your notes though, I'll look for you when next passing through

Welcome Austin. I've experienced this too, the same as you've described without any obvious relationship to ambient temperature or driving load. Have experienced it without towing or excessive sunlight. Seems to be a few reports of the same thing on Disco3 from guys in the UK without any definitive explanation. Has never caused any issues on mine, touch wood.

    Cheers,
    Scott

I thought it was a feature of the newer models, designed for you to be able to sit a cup of latte on there and keep it warm.

I have no such luxuries - mine has a conventional gear lever (and proper "Land Rover" badges on the bonnet).
    Cheers .........

You forgot to add it lacks a bit of power and a few gears
Having Discovery on the bonnet stops people asking "Is that a jeep"

    Thanks guys,
I'm not sure if this is a feature of all D4's or just a few. I'm pretty sure it's not a design feature and I just hoping that it isn't a precursor to a expensive gear box problem. We dont use the car to drop the kids off at school and I sure need to know the D4 will bring me home from the center of Australia. I'm still bit skittish after an evening looking at LandroverHell.com.
    Thanks for your comments
