    D4 rain sensing wipers

Regarding the automatic rain sensing wipers, when auto is selected on the stalk the windscreen wipers always activate with a dry wipe under the following conditions (no moisture present).

    1. Low ambient light - driving at dawn or dusk or at night.

    2. Entering a basement car park or in the garage or a tunnel.

I understand the rain sensor senses the amount of refracted light. In my case the rain sensor is too sensitive and activates. Can the sensor be adjusted as to avoid these unwanted wipes on a dry screen or is this normal operation?

    Swish.....

My 2011 D4 does exactly the same......no cure for that initial wipe that I know off.....others may be able to help? You could leave it on auto most of the time????

We had the reverse problem, would not work unless in a thunderstorm. Fixed at service where they found the sensors had not been installed properly. As well was advised the sensitivity can be programmed

We leave ours "off" at all times to prevent seeps of a dry screen as it does harm to glass and wiper blades

The sensativity is adjusted by twisting the dwell function a normal intermittent wiper has,try turning it to less sensative.
I have had a sensor replaced already, because the auto lights were doing some special things(same sensor unit as wipers) and the wipers not very auto at all.It was still faulty after fittment, there was an air bubble in there, which seems to have gone elsewhere now.Rain sensor and headlight sensor now working the best it has.

I've always thought this "dry wipe" was to get a base line for the sensor, so it can detect change from that point onwards.

    Thanks folks,

We just returned from a drive and left the stalk in auto. We started a drive this afternoon, stopped and started twice in broad daylight and had no dry wipe. We then had dinner and left as the sun was going down and had a single wipe. Finally, we drove in the garage at home and again had a wipe. So it's clearly to do with light refraction.

There is absolutely nothing in the manual that mentions a wipe other than when you select wipers auto from off. Been told by LR today that this is "normal". Very contradictory considering manual says never wipe a dry screen nor does it make mention of this.

Still not convinced and don't think it's "normal".

Sensitivity for wipers were reduced to minimum and had no change. Still had the dry wipe.

    Love the auto wipers (&flights)
Occasionally get a dry wipe but usually when the screens quite dusty or dirty
