A check by someone who knows will drain the fuel filter element so that should be an indicator as to fuel condition. Not sure where you take your car but if used for touring and not outback refuelling then anywhere there is high volume fuel sales generally means clean fuel
Our experience from around 15 years of outback tours is fuel contamination comes firstly from poorly maintained JC, followed by not cleaning around the filler neck before putting a fuel nozzle in. Basic hygiene stuff folk seem to forget.
From there refuelling from bulk and 220l drums away from major outback spots also adds to the risk. But we have usual suspects along the Stuart Hwy into the NT where we know the fuel is dodgy regardless of where they are so we try and avoid those spots as well.
To avoid the risks we use a Mr Funnell aviation grade funnel/filter which costs around $60 and can handle fuel from a high speed nozzle without problems. IN taking this option we quickly establish fuel quality.
In saying all that we have only ever experienced bad fuel from outback servos when not using the Mr Funnel. I rarely if ever use it in Birdsville for example unless there has been a fuel drop into the underground tanks in the last four hours
