    Used disco 4

Hi guys new to this forum we are looking to buy a used 4wd for around the 50k mark, i have my heart set on a disco 4, is it a risk buying one out of warranty because i have heard so many mixed reviews about them, or am i just best sticking with a prado.

An interesting way of framing a question Nick.

As silly as this sounds and I admit it does, but one way of measuring the two vehicles is does the Prado fraternity have an equavelent to the D3/4 often mentioned permagrin?

Regarding reliability, if you do your homework through reading stuff on here and asking specific questions about the model and year Disco you are considering then I'm sure you will find out everything you need to know.
    Cheers,
    Terry

Are you looking at any model and spec in particular?

If your patient often you can find top of the line models for not a lot more than entry level models. I always buy HSE models second hand because bang for buck they are way in front of the entry or SE models.
    Cheers,

HSE model would be great but SE is fine for me an the mrs because we have kids and dogs and we will be taking it on a few camping trips. I will definitely take my time picking the right vehicle with a full service history.

If you get a minute compare the asking prices of a same vintage secondhand HSE to a SE, you may get a surprise. The SE from memory got a number of upgrades for the 2012 model.
Just saying, but I know more people with HSE's that take them off road and treat them the way they are meant than owners of entry and SE models.

Either way a SE or HSE are both very nice bits of gear. Good luck with your search.
    Cheers,
    Terry

A 2.7 is good to drive and it uses 18" rims which have much better tyre choices.

However, the 3.0 is much better to drive. The down side is it only fits 19" or 20" rims.

    I would aim for a HSE with a standard 3.0 over a lower spec D4 with a SDV6.

The Prado is a good vehicle and your more likely to find a mechanic who is familiar with the vehicle if you have a problem.

However, the D4 is miles ahead for comfort, features and off road ability. The Prado only got terrain response in 2015 and only on the top spec models.

It's likely a D4 will be more expensive to maintain than a Prado. For example it looks like a D4 up to 2012 sometime had a ZF transmission which should probably services every 50,000km (earlier and later transmissions used a different stator bush so service ever 100,000km was ok). Air suspension is a great feature but can also mean more things to go wrong.

Now that I've smashed you between the eyes I should say that I was happy buying a 2008 RRV which had 230,000km with a similar ZF transmission, almost the same air suspension and the same family of motors. I've had a couple of expensive items (transmission and alternator), but have no regrets with my purchase.
