Thread: What to buy D4 Tdv6 2.7 or D4 tdv6 3.0

Yes the D3 was very sorted by 2009 and a very nice bit of kit.

A D4 SE, even a early one, is a far superior vehicle on a number of fronts but yes your correct it sounds like the early ones are starting to have some potential big dollar issues.

Both of the Disco's you have listed are coming up for belts soon so factor in a couple of thousand in maintenance for either.

I'm betting the 2010 SE will have more options than the the 2.7. If they are the same money with equally good service history I would go the 3.0. I'd be getting it serviced every 10,000km from now on.

If having 18" tyres for off road work is really important then if all else is equal I would consider the 2.7, as LR 18" rims won't fit the 3.0.

As said above you will have belts due on both, if not already done.

Budget for 4 Compomotive/GOE 18" rims and 1 or 2 D3/D4 18" rims for spares.

I was fortunate to buy my 2.7 D4 with a set of extra Compomotive alloy rims. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone as 2 of the rims have developed cracks through the alloy 'spokes'.

After a lot of searching for a welder who would do the job, I had 1 repaired and use it strictly as a spare but now another has cracked....

I do a lot of dirt road driving and exploring but nothing extreme at all and am very surprised that they are cracking.

The alloy welder said that he thought the first cracked rim was due to a stress fracture and once it cracked and relieved the stress, should be all OK...perhaps the 2nd rim is suffering the same 'stress'??

Apart from that hiccup - a great all round car!!

I've not heard of any issues with the Compomotive, except for someone damaging one on impact with a tree stump.

One of mine cracked through the bead area of the rim but I think it got hit with something. We had it welded up and use it for a spare. I also got a chain saw adjusting screw driver through the tyre and the inner part of the rim when I ran over it at Litchfield National Park and it flicked up through the rear tyre. It was the same rim and that was what caused me to get it all welded up after Gordon told me who could do it in Perth.

17" after market rims.....good choice of off-road 17" tyres and I can knock them around driving off-road.

18" LR rims.....good choice of 18" road tyres and I keep the rims pristine without being knocked around off-road
