winch not working - need to remove my bar

Ok, so how much of a driveway / weekender job is removing my winch from an Opposite Lock bar (D4 2011)? It doesn't work anymore. I get a good clicking sound from the contacts when i use the controller but no action on the motor. I tried hot wiring the power line in the control box end to one of the direction nodes (i think it was reverse) but got nothing. Well, actually i got a huge amount of sparks (even though was expecting them) and melted the jumper leads, but still no motor movement.

Think i need to get it out to properly test it as I really can't work on it inside the bar.

Im pretty sure the OL man told me I wouldnt need to remove my bar to fit a winch.
Worth ringing a dealer to see if it has to come off.
There are some fairly big guards under the bar.

I have the same bar, but no winch as yet. I'd reckon it's easiest to remove the 6 horizontal bolts holding the bar on, after firmly supporting it. The winch will come with the bar (obviously disconnect all cables first). Repair winch, replace in bar, refit bar.

I have been looking at that approach but gaining access to the inside receiving nuts on those bash plates looked almost impossible. I think I'd get then off very easily but not convinced i'd get them back together again.

before you have a go at the winch...

double check all the solenoids usually you need to have 2 engage to have the winch do anything.

The nuts are cage style (server rack nuts), and they are retained in the bar when you remove the plates.

Hehe - guess what I've been doing over the last couple of spare days? Took the dead winch out of my OL bar - taking off cover plate underneath and then removing the 4 bolts that go through to winch frame via captive nuts.

Then the two most mundane/time-absorbing jobs - washing the dyneema rope (shoot me - please!)... and removing gearbox/cleaning out hardened grease/re-greasing with marine grease.

Turns out the solenoid box was not sealed properly when assembled - about half a cup of water came out of it! One of the 4 glands were not seated correctly. I've ordered a new solenoid today and will take a chance that the remote control is still working.

FWIW, OL installed the solenoid box behind the winch, rather than on top of the bullbar - and there was still enough room to get it out without removing the bullbar... just!

Hint for doing it by yourself - tie the winch to the bullbar with some suitable rope/wire and after you've undone the mounting bolts - undo the knot and lower the winch down by hand. Was easier than trying to get the floor jack into position, as the solenoid box being behind it didn't give me enough room.

Oh - and tomorrows job will be cleaning the intercooler of mud/muck - while I have a good view!

You guys are brilliant, thanks for posting your knowledge.

Scheduled this job for April / May before another Northern Territory trip as too much happening right now.

Will post update on how I went / faults found when it get there.

@ Jonsey63 - they installed my solenoid box on top of the bar. This might be a help in getting to the motor easier. Thanks for the tips.

    cheers

This tip I found somewhere in the past was very useful. Cut the heads off some bolts the same size and screw into the winch when putting it back. Makes lining it up easier , then just replace them one at a time with the real ones when its in position.
