Just looking to get peoples feedback and experience on Rust Proofing options. I will be doing a fair amount of beach work and want to know how far I should go to protect.
There are places like this that do different types of rust proofing including special under car sprays as well as the electronic types
Conventional Spray Rust proofing | Rust Free Automotive
thanks in advance
Conventional rust proofing - yes,
Electronic rust proofing - no. Has been thoroughly discredited.
Rust proofing threads tend to bring out everyones opinions, some of which are based on preconceptions.
I have used traditional (spray) treatments previously on my Subaru, electronic on my Prado and now Landy. The conventional needed reapplication yearly to keep warranty, while the electronic was a set and forget (unless it stops flashing). Despite the trreatments I always do a before and after beach wash at Rainbow etc.. I have never had any rust problems on any of my cars after more than 10years of occasional beach use. I certainly feel better with the electronic system since thats what lifesavers and professional fishermen use when they stay on the beach for hours !
Of course if you wash your car throroughly before/after beach use, some will say you dont need any other treatment.
I think its like insurance and electronic gives me the most peace of mind.
Cheers and see you on the beach

They are very well treated at the factory. They have to be as they use salt on european roads to melt snow and ice.
Look at the drainage holes in the doors, you can see the stuff.
You have a 6 year corrosion warranty so I would be very careful about treating it.

Do you want people's opinions or do you want the facts?
Are you more convinced by anecdotal evidence or research?
Are you going to rely on gut feelings or scientific tests?
Does this look like a useful piece of information?
NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe is warning NSW consumers not to waste their money buying computerised electronic corrosion inhibitors (CECI devices) for motor vehicles after investigations by Western Australia Consumer Protection revealed the devices don't work.

The Disco 1 and Rangie Classics had serious rust issues, yet the D2 never did.Ive never seen a D2/D3/D4 or the Rangies in the P38a onwards models suffer from rust issues.

i had mine sprayed with Tectyl,by a panel shop,no rust anywhere,but i don't do a lot of beach work.
The most important thing is to keep an eye over the whole vehicle regularly for any rust or corrosion.
I have had to reapply it on many areas, particularly the underneath rear third of the vehicle,as this area cops a hiding by the sand and also dirt and stones on dirt roads.
Tectyl is available in handy spray packs for ease of use.The product is also available in a 4litre tin,and is more difficult and messy to apply, but can be applied a lot thicker,so it lasts longer.
We have also done the complete underneath of the Defender with Tectyl as well.No sign of any rust anywhere, and it does a lot of beach work. The paint on the Defender's chassis is no where hear the quality of the D4 or for that matter the D2 either.
I used the rust free guys...they also do a reapplication treatment - remove all the protection plates and clean it out underbody and touch up the treatment -$70 - I'd spend more time backing it on to the grass & getting it to emergency height
Ps mines still waiting to be washed after Fraser .... Work so freaking busy
