One of those Things I shouldn't Have Done!

I bought my Discovery 3 new in 2009.
It is an SE & should have come with 18" rims but for some reason it came with 19's.
So, after 4 flat tyres from hitting rocks (happens a bit out around Doomadgee) I decided I didn't want 19" rims because I didn't have enough tyre between myself & the road.
    I wish I hadn't done that!
I bought 17" rims (should I name them?) which took forever to get, then the centre hole was the wrong size, forever to get that sorted.
Then within a year the 2 rims on the rear cracked!
Got them replaced & now I have found they are cracking again!!!!
So, now I'm in Doomadgee with 2 X cracked rims. I have to drive home in 3 weeks which is 887km on a mixture of good & bad roads.
Now, just to make matters more frustrating I still have the 19" rims at home, 887km away, but the tyres on them are very worn & no freight runs from home to here. SWMBO would have to put the 4 rims in her car, drive to town, get new tyres put on, get the tyres & rims to Townsville & onto the freight. This is not going to happen.
Oh, & just to top it off I can't remember where the original wheel nuts ended up? I would need these to get the wheels on.
What am I going to do about it?
Well, I may have found 5 X D3 18" rims with good Cooper tyres on Gumtree. If the bloke has wheel nuts? & if he will drop them to freight for me it might be a goer.
Not even close to cheap though.
If he doesn't have wheel nuts I will see how much LR in Townsville wants for a set$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ & might order them from there.
I really, really don't want to drive home on cracked rims.

So, I really shouldn't have ever bought those 17" rims.
I should have asked the dealer to swap the 19" for 17" or 18" on 1 of the D3's that were sitting in the yard.
    Hind sight is wonderful thing.
Being stupid can cost a lot of money!

What wheel nuts doe you have, are they these?

If so, you could get some bare 17" X5 rims (which don't crack - well, no reports of it yet!) sent to you and someone local to swap the rubber over?

    Maybe?
    They look like those.
I will rip one off after work & try to measure it & see.
    Thanks

Grentarc's solution would be the cheapest option with the current tyres swapped over, if you have the wheel nuts he has linked to. There's a set of four BMW X5 17" wheels that will fit currently on gumtree:
    Bmw x5 17" rims & tyres | Wheels, Tyres & Rims | Gumtree Australia Port Phillip - St Kilda | 1110786977

If you are still considering the 18" option and you find your original wheel nuts, I've got a spare set of 5 x 18" rims in the garage the same as what you have found on gumtree. Happy to help you find and fit tyres in Brisbane and look at freight options. I'll be in Longreach in two weeks, but that's still about 1000km's away though...

Your 17" rims probably use standard tapered nuts, not those with extended shank that are suited to X5 rims.

There's a LR workshop/wreckers in Qld that's likely to have s/h standard LR nuts.

    Sad.
But at least you have options.
I spent 80K on a vehicle that cannot be used for purpose in SOFT sand due to the tyre size.
Its OK,I love the thing to bits, rant over Put another 600km on it today, what a pleasure. There is green grass everywhere, the only place it wasnt green was where the farmers have been sod busting. Its not normally green yet over here, traditionally it doesnt rain sometime until after Anzac day, they usualy dry seed lupins after Anzac day.Much more rain and they will be getting boggedThere will be some bumper crops over here this year with such an early break.

    Probably not.
I have to work until my new off-siders get here then I have to train them. We trade 7 days.
Also the only car I have available (not counting the D3) is the work Hilux which currently has no spare tyre, new ones coming.

I have asked SWMBO to send the kids up to the shed to see if they can find 20 wheel nuts.
Fat chance but we live in hope.

I will phone wreckers on Tuesday, see how I go.

    I think I can help...

I spoke to my mate who owns Hawkins transport who runs a service from Normanton to Doomadgee every 10 days. He has a truck leaving Darwin next Thursday which will be in Normanton next weekend ( end of April) , I am unsure of when his next truck to Doomadgee is but I will check.

I have 5 x steel 17" rims with Cooper STT plus all the wheel nuts in my shed which I can put on Thursdays truck to Normanton then Bradley will get them on the next Doomadgee service, which should arrive before you need to leave.

    All I ask is that

    - when you get home and sort out your rims and tyres you contact me so we can get them sent back. He has yards in Cairns, Cloncurry and Normanton , plus a few other places.

I will be needing them in early july so I think we have time, and I am looking at putting A/T tyres on so am happy for them to get used as they are still at about 50% or more.

Send me a PM with your name and a contact number and I will sort it out.

    Cheers Ean
