    Considering a diesel Pre-filter

As I'm heading north and far away as possible with a few river crossings thrown in I was considering a diesel care fuel manager pre filter Primary (Pre) Fuel Filter Kits | Diesel Care but I went to order one and was told there was not a kit available (bracket and hoses) as its too tight in a D3 was the reason given.

Question is, has anyone fitted one and was there anything special to watch out for etc?

I'm almost sure I have the the water sensor on mine but wanted to catch the bad fuel before it enters the standard filter system.

I guess I could put one from the AUX tank to the main and only top up the Aux from the bowser if I suspect the station has old or contaminated fuel etc but that doesn't stop a river crossing contamination possibilities etc.

I wouldn't bother putting anything in before the main fuel filter.

I made this mistake on my 110. Stupidly I fitted a 2 micron filter which quickly blocked. I had one spare and it blocked too. Then I was stuck. It worked to a higher spec of filtration than the motor required.

If you're really keen, consider a cheap in line petrol filter before the oem setup which will trap all the bigger particles, which could be present in fuel from your aux steel tank.

I know Davis Performance Landys install the water watch system in D3s, but it is about $1k installed.

I have the biggest flow Filter Funnel and I can tell you that it is painfully slow to fill with a diesel pump. With a D2 , you also have to have 3 hands as they have to be upright so it would be best to use one to fill a jerry then use the jerry to fill the tank which is also pretty difficult. I don't know about D3/4/

Maybe in petrol they flow what they say but diesel NOPE!

I reckon there would be a mutiny if you used one at a busy roadhouse pump. I only used it once at a quiet fuel station in WA and the owner asked me what I was doing to be so slow.
Good for unknown jerry cans however.

If you are doing it mainly for water separation then as long as the filter isn't a less micron filter than the main filter you should be ok. I have pictures of a extra filter installed on a D3 similar to that but it was installed near the primary filter with a shroud made to cover it.

It was mainly used as a water separator not a fuel filter.

Thanks. The main reason is for water separation as I believe that the LR filter is ok at filtration as long as it's replaced each service. Pic would be great.

I have a roof top tank for diesel, so I can gravity feed it into the main tank (for the amount of long distance travel I do, I didn't want a permanent long range tank). I bought a water separation filter from a marine supply place that will help remove water, but will shut off once it's saturated, so that might be an option. Flow isn't fast though.
