If you plan to stop at national parks in QLD they ALL have to be pre-booked and some do get very crowded during the hols (esp Chilli Beach, Elliot Falls, Capt Billy). Some of the camp spots on the cape also get booked out (Punsand was fully booked last year more than 2 months out).
I think the RTT is great for a touring setup, but dont forget to plan all your required supplies before you setup for the night. Also if you are stopping somewhere for multiple nights you might still need your car to explore during the day and means your campsite might be taken when you return (unless its pre-booked). We had a convoy so we usually left our camp and travelled with the others during multiple day stops.
Having said that, we loved having the RTT and setup/packup was always about 10-15mins (if you dont use the Annexe, or add another 10mins for the Annexe). Keeping all the bedding ready and out of the way is also a big bonus.
