The system disables the vehicle until it's topped up as per the warning levels explained at the link kelvo posted.
This is how LR has chosen to comply with Euro6. I guess eventually there'll be a workaround, a bit like EGR but seems pretty easy to keep topped up.

I don't think this applies to MY16 D4 here in OZ?
I have a 2016 build MY16 D4 - no Adblue. According to the manual you can tell by the presence of the additional filler cap along side the fuel filler.
