Mike.
You had a long range tank.
How much did it get used??? was it to save fuel costs or extend range???
Would be interested to know as we get a reasonable range out of these D4s.
Andrew
I thought I would start this thread now, since I just got the new one. OK the story is well documented and I am not going to add any pictures of how it is now, since they are already on the Show us your Disco thread.
But I will document the additions, accessories and the why chosen /not chosen in this thread. I am not promising the decisions will make any sense but they will give an indication of my thinking at the time I made them.
Hopefully as time goes on I will be able to determine for your and my edification whether they were sensible or not.
First today I bought rubber floor mats (genuine) and I think probably a no brainer.
I also have quotes for the following:
Rear Wheel Carrier
Long Range Tank
Cargo Barrier (again a no brainer, I think it probably helped to save from serious injury when I rolled the D3)
Bullbar
Sliders/Stand off bars
Dual battery (only one so far, will also need to get a quote from elsewhere and do some research on this)
Snorkel
Next I need to think about LLAMS and possibly GOE 18s
I am not going to detail prices, suffice it to say that I will make some decisions based on cost and what I believe is necessary and try to document the reasons, for the way the decisions I made. And show pics as the/any mods happen
Cheers
Mike

Mike, I have an Autosafe barrier for a D4 sitting here doing nothing. PM me if your interested.
Cheers,

Andrew, it was brand new, the reason I got it was both. My parents and brother live up near Coffs Harbour, with the long range I get up there and back (600 km each way) plus driving around, on a single tank. Don't have to refuel up there, around 15 - 20 cents per litre saving.
But more important, I went to Melrose and further two years ago. The main tank would have done Arkaroola to Tibooburra safely as it turned out, but to me the safety margin was not good enough. My wife did not like jerries in the car.
So both reasons were good
Cheers

I have to say that Rocio gave me the go ahead on the Rear Wheel Carrier once she realised the difficulty of changing a tyre with the standard configuration.
Once she had experience of jerries of fuel on board, she also said we need to get a long range tank at some stage.
A truly beautiful lady and totally practical. Just as she began to appreciate her adopted country she was taken from us. Sometimes it is a crappy world
Thanks Mike.
Historically our fuel in Williams has been as dear as poison.
However because of a price war between the Shell and Caltex roadhouses chaining the roadtrains the price of fuel here has consistantly less than Perth in the last 18 months, and at times substantially cheaper.
Sort of kills any argument for me to buy a LRT.However I think I will be fitting one once I bite the bullet and decide its time to travel. My thoughts would be much as yours, safety of carrying fuel, which you proved in the D3 roll and safety in range, skipping known expensive fuel stations would be a bonus too.LOTS of annual leave and longservice leave in the bank

Yes Andrew my thinking exactly. I don't mind paying high prices in remote areas, it costs to get it there. But I want to know I can get from A to B without issues.
The major reason for the long range tank.
Reason two is the difference in price, nowhere near as important in my view.
Cheers
Mike
I'll be waiting, watching and learning Mike.
Sorry to see/hear about the old bus, but glad to see your sorting it.
In regards to the LRT, the only problem I see with these is there's no tap to lock off the secondary tank. I'm going to try and sort this somehow, not sure of the best way, but we'll see.
Looking forward to seeing yours being built up.

My lrt is pump driven not gravity fed. Holing a tank and isolation was one of the considerations in my choice of tank.
