Thread: keeping on top of servicing

We had a filter company rep come to a 4wd club meeting of ours, he recommended to stick with the factory schedule.

The reason being is that filters do not work to their optimum first off, they require the proper build up for them to work their best. Change too often and they don't clean as designed and your also wasting money & resources.

Having heard that the D3 was 12,000k, same 2.7 engine in the D4 was changed to 24,000k. If I had a D4 I'd be sticking with the 12,000k!

Will agree with this.In earthmoving and ag gear you dont clean air filters to the ECU tells you too.The way it was explained to me was dust filters dust,dont clean until there is a restriction.

What difference is there between Km travelled and time , does it matter if it takes 18 months to do 10000k or is it a requirement to change the oil and filter at 12 months regardless if oil looks reasonably clean .

Oil ages if its being used or not, just sometimes it ages faster than other times. If your not doing many km's or lots of short trips then the oil may not heat up enough to evaporate acids, moisture and fuel and they may very well build up. But really without going to the extent to test your used oil you wont know if you can just run to the km traveled or 12 month time frame.

My Son just took his my2016 D4 in for a service at 13,000 the women behind the counter said that the first service is at 26,000 my son replied yer I know but thats for people who dont keep their cars for long. There was a service mechanic in the room at the time and he said thats for sure I would be doing what you are doing if it was my car.

Wow looks like I had it all wrong.

I have a sponsor for my fluids and oils for my race car, the engine oil is the same as the disco so luckily I don't have to pay for it, I would have thought the more frequent changes the better ? the car is driven almost 800km a week and interstate towing race car once a month. so it has a hard life

That's ok mate. That's not a hard life....
That's just good use!

Regular servicing is more effective than over servicing - modern engines are cleaner, more efficient and better materials in construction. Oils are a lot better as you'd know.

I do oil analysis on my vehicles and have never needed to change before 12k

Well on average I eat one sandwich a week , and if I was to buy a loaf of bread I would imagine once I took out my 2 slices for that week it would be another week before my next sandwich, there is a good chance that loaf would be stale and yes would end up in the bin.

I do all the maintenance and servicing on thevehicle myself so the labor cost is not a problem , I am lucky enough to get my oils through a sponsor and have a contact at Land rover so I get filters for a reasonable price.

After forking out heap of cash for this vehicle I want to keep it in top condition, I think a simple way is to change fluids before they start to deteriorate "Control the controllables".

I for one would rather over service the vehicle then have to fork out for new turbo's, engines, gearbox ect ...
