I've got a Foxwing and when I use it it's great..... I chose it because I found it being sold stupid cheap, but if I had a straight awning, I'd probably use it more often.

After everyones feedback,I think I will look at a standard awning with the option of filling the outside with an extra canvas.
I want a slimline rack,cant see the a Foxwing style awning working in with the rear door.
Main use would be some cover and a place to lay out a swag on beach fishing trips.

They do work OK with the rear door Andy... and I've got a platform type roof rack..

Yes I agree, I have the pioneer platform with short legs, sits very flat and low to the roof, and I reversed the Foxwing brackets so that it sits down below the rack not above it, and it still works with the rear door, no hassles at all. Works brilliantly for solo camping as you I have cover for your swag at the side and for the rear where you do your food prep etc and a spot to set up your chair at the back under cover.

Andrew - if you are going to go that way, make sure that you buy one which has a length of sail track on the outside edge of the awning, and another on the inside (directly under the awning inside the storage bag). Not all of them do.

I have an Ironman awning fitted on mine which has both - but I also have a Black Widow awning (which is a much better awning - better brackets and much better material than the Ironman) that was on the D2 which only has the outside track.

With both tracks on the awning, you can buy an "awning room" which uses the two tracks to attach under the awning (I have the Ironman "awning room"). They are very handy for a quick overnight stop - only take a few minutes to attach.



You can also buy an "awning extension" from Rays Outdoors or BCF which attaches to the outside of your awning. This gives you a "wall" to fill the outside as you have suggested. Or, if you carry a couple of extra tent poles with you, you can use this "wall" as an awning extension to give you double the size awning. I have modified mine so that I can either use this "awning extension" on its own, or I can attach both the "awning room" and the awning extension at the same time to give me a tent or room under the original awning, plus another full size awning outside the tent. The two extra tent poles that I use for this are the tent pole / LED lights that I bought a while back from Drifta - it all works very well. These photos were of it set up at Eucla on the way across to SA recently.

That's basically the setup our Jet Tent has Andy. Highly recommended the dual use setup with the extra walls too. We add walls so the dog has some shelter and leave them off if it's just the two of us. Same same but different.

Totally agree with Brian about the sail track and flexibility with walls and extensions. We have the same setup with our SupaPeg awning and they sell the room and walls and even a mesh only option. But you could even diy some of these things if the Mrs is handy with the sewing machine.

We have some canvas pockets with sail track edge that we fit LEDs into. So there's lots of ways to use sail track.

I intend to get a second rear-only awning if I think we need more than the 2x2.5 side awning but it's been plenty so far. And I'm conscious of losing roof rack capacity to a big awning.

And another thought. We have one of these shelters for over the tailgate. Works pretty well if set up at the beach for awhile. One side is up in the photo.
