Petrol in the tank! (Friend new to diesels)

    Hi All

My friend made the ultimate boo boo with a M12SE. He drove about two k left it over the weekend then tried to start and things went badly. He's been told by the dealer worst case scenario is new engine $20K and been quoted $1100 for a drain, clean and assessment by the SGIO approved dude.

What is the best case scenario? And likely middle scenario?

Do insurance companies ever come to the party?

Poor bloke, it's his first diesel and first Landy. Got it two months ago. He just learnt an expensive lesson

PS the thingy that triggers when you stick a petrol nozzle in, didn't trigger

I don't know about the D4 but my dad filled up his Hyundai I30 diesel with Petrol and it wouldn't start the next day. They drained the tank and cleaned it out and there were no issues at all and nowhere near $1000.00. It did 30,000 km over several years after that and there was no permanent damage at all.

I started filling up two weekends ago on a trip with BP Ultimate. From force of habit with my BP garage at home that has a diesel only bowser with Ultimate Diesel I just thought it was diesel and started to fill up before closely checking it and finding it said petrol on the handle, not diesel. Luckily I only put in 2 l out of 65 l and it made no difference to anything. I kept topping up the tank with my long range tank every couple of km to dilute it as quickly as possible on the 200 km trip and didn't suffer any ill effects, thank goodness.

The miss fueling device has been removed on mine because of the long range tank. Maybe your friend's is the same. I've had my car since 2012 so it is not only a newbie thing!

So I've got some information. If insurance says no, take it to independent specialist.

Get everything drained, filters replaced, oil change for good measure. Pray that HPFP does not fail soon.
