Waeco fridge running on main battery

    Hey guys

I know this is not ideal but as a very temporary measure I'm trying to find out how long I can run the Waeco CF50 on my cars main battery via the car cigarette lighter in the boot.

I'm going to be away this weekend for one night only so less than 24 hours without the car running however I will be on my own hence wanting to calculate the safe amount of time so that I can still crank the battery to come home without getting stuck.

This is very new to me, only bought the fridge this week so any tips would be great

    Thanks

    It is a CF-50, not a CFX-50?
Not sure about the CF, but my CFX has 3 settings so that it will cut out and in at certain voltages - 1 setting is for single battery setups, so cuts out at higher voltage than the other two, 2nd setting is at a little lower voltage - ie. small 2nd battery setup, or 3rd is a much lower setting, making sure the fridge stays on below 11v (10.5 or 10.7 is the cutout maybe?).

That will help to make sure you don't get stuck due to flat battery but not much help of the fridge stops working half way through the nights and your beer goes warm.

    There are heaps of variables.
    Ambient temp
    How full is the fridge
What temp is it set at
How often are you opening it

All this will impact the current draw and there for how long it will last before cutting out.
My 60L sent my battery flat (enough not to start the disco) in a matter of hours once

If you must do it, try freezing water or ice packs to help assist the fridge but IMHO I wouldn't do it.

The 12 volt sockets are not live once the car is off - unless you have modified.
If it's only for the weekend, a bag of ice will do the trick!

They make great esky"s as they are well insulated.

I just wouldn't take the risk of a flat main battery.

Buy a portable aux battery. It will charge off the main battery cig plug whilst travelling, the fridge will run off the aux with the ignition off.BCF/Sopercrapp etc all sell them.
The vehicle wont let you run the ignition on for very long without the motor running.
As mentioned, ice will help,I always have litre bottles in my freezer side whilst on trips, when I need the space I can defrost and drink them.

Are you sure? My rear socket ran a light when I tested it.

My D2 & also the D3 are both only active when the ignition is on so I assume the D4 is the same.
