    Cracked LR4 rim.

Anyone else experienced a cracked LR4 19" rim? Recently returned from exploring / camping out at Shark Bay / Steep Point got a flat rear drivers tyre. Couldn't locate a puncture however could not get pressure on the tyre. Changed out the wheel and on further inspection found a crack through from the inner rim. The rim is deformed a bit...do not recall any heavy landings....got the wheels up in the air over heavily rutted sand tracks however was basically only crawling along. Not towing any load...max weight on roof rack 90kg (incl roof rack) at the time, no more than 50kg in rear cargo bay and have dual wheel carriers...so I don't think too much weight an issue. Tyres pressures were down to 18psi however once again travelling over soft sand.

Could only have been caused by an impact onto something solid? If there are no impact marks and it a structural failure of the rim itself, I would be asking questions of Land Rover? Things like wheels should have such a high Factor of Safety in design that structural failure at normal loadings should not be possible....

I haven't noted any other genuine LR wheel failures......

No impact marks...The Disco has done over 45000km in last 12 months and do not recall any time where I nearly shattered my teeth from a big impact or landing...only the occasional time where you hit a bull dust hole on the dirt roads up in the Pilbara and Kimberley and bottom out one of the wheel suspension however even that hasn't been too excessive.
Hoping its one of those rare failures as planning a 3 month trip in June 2017 from Hedland to Well 23 - 33 on CSR, across Gary Junction Track, down the Sandy Blight track into Alice Springs than Up the tanami across to Kunnarra than back track on GRR and Munja Track back to Hedland...no good having 2 spares if LR rims crack.

    That's had a solid hit...

Don't always believe that the hit or failure will show up when it happens.

That's why a TPMS is so worthwhile on them.
I stabbed a tyre on the highway about 15km out of Waikerie and we were motoring along at the posted limit without any noticeable handling changes on a flat left rear...

Completely destroyed the near new tyre...

The photo of you rim shows something solid and wide (not point loading) pushing the inside lip of the wheel inwards...

And to be fair, being the inside it's possibly had a big hit during one of your other trips and has fatigued to failure point..

Mine bent but did not crack, had them repaired and sold them as they were surplus after the insurance claim.

The 3rd picture tells the story with its long flattened section to the left of the crack.

The air suspension soaks up so much it's not funny.

I cut a side wall off a (punctured) tyre on a tarmac road and hardly noticed until I was down to less than 20psi.

On the flip side, I had a little incident on Fraser Island that buckled 4 wheels .... 3 tons at about 50kph coming to an almost sudden stop .... no cracks. Car was still driveable with almost no noticeable issue but the vibration at certain speeds annoyed me to the point where I got the wheels checked about three months later.

I'd say you've had a really hard hit and the suspension masked it.

I reckon you are right Celtoid.

The airbags under these thing do mask just how hard things are working underneath.... and the flat spot on that rim is a dead give away, at some point it has had serious impact.
