I haven't tried any such work.
I would be cutting the damaged section out in a neat rectangle if you aren't removing the original trim and putting a piece of contact paper in its place to minimise the repair showing thru.
See what others say,now you have the leather replacement it may be cost effective to get a trimmer to do the job professionaly.
