    EOI - Brake Conversion to run 18" wheels on D4 3.0l TDV6

I would like to gauge interest in likely demand for a front brake conversion to enable fitting of 18" wheels to the D4 3.0l TDV6/SDV6. The conversion would use an alternate lower profile brake caliper and retain the OEM rotor. I have two options under investigation at the moment, one using an aftermarket manufacturer, and the other utilising a caliper from an Australian marketed vehicle. Both options will require an adapter plate to fit to the LR hub mounting points.

The brake conversion would require engineering certification. I have an engineer in Perth who will certify the conversion (on a vehicle basis). Ideally I would like to set up a "vehicle type" certification but I have no idea yet if this is even feasible?

Likely cost would be in the order of $1,000 for the calipers, $500 for the hardware, and I have been quoted $500 for a vehicle specific Engineering Certification in Perth, so around $2,000 all up converted over. If I go down the path of use of a caliper used on an marketed vehicle, this opens up the possibility of used calipers being available and pads being more readily available "over the counter". LR 18"wheels are available used for up to $500 for a set, or others such as BMW X5 18" wheels are readily available cheaper (subject to confirmation that they will fit).

Physical conversions have not been attempted yet, I am still in the research phase, but things are looking positive to date.

Happy for any thoughts or comments....

    Cheers,
    Chris

GOE wheels would be cheaper and a lot less trouble.

Because it is cheaper and opens up a much more widely and freely available selection of suitable wheels.

5 GOE wheels will set you back $3,000+, great if you like the black colour and style. So more if you wanted to paint them. Try to go out and buy a GOE rim tomorrow if you needed one.....

    Of course they would.
Then there is the problem of getting it engineered,GOOD LUCK!!!!!
Cant see the point of re-inventing the wheel in a serious safety area.

I believe Graeme on here has done this and got it engineered?

You just said it will be at least $2500 including the wheels (second hand if you can find some) plus a lot more for new wheels, so no significant saving and more expensive with new wheels of the style you may want the next day.

GOE wheels have a choice of colours not just black. Mine are grey.

Try to go out and buy upgraded brakes and get an engineering certificate tomorrow if you need them!!

The only valid reason would be to use a different wheel style, not to save money, and you would compromise the design and possibly the safety of the car in the process.

I wouldn't buy it but others may, so hopefully it works out as hoped.

I didn't get the change engineered as the engineer who was happy to sign-off retired before I got to him so decided to rely on earlier verbal advice from the RTA and argue my case if needed. Justin has since refitted the original brakes, albeit retaining the 2.7 rear calipers which will allow LR 18" rims.

    These days if I really didn't want 19" rims I'd have 4 Compomotive/GOE with 2 LR 18" as spares.
