What was impeding lubrication to the shaft and TC gear? It does sound like a lack of lubrication issue - but I have little intel on trannys.

If I turn the car off and back on, it's gone, but inevitably returns. Sometimes it will run fine around town for 15-20 mins and then it rears its ugly head again only to go away for another 10 mins repeat.

I have no issue with gears slipping, shudder etc. Car drives well and is smooth.
It sounds as though the noise has nothing to do with the oil change but could be the torque converter or the flex plate disintegrating.

If its a TC diagnosis is it worth just replacing TC? Depends on how much damage is in there I assume.

Well the tranny needs to be rebuilt. The TC was likened to a squashed tomato which is an interesting analogy. It's being done in Melbourne at an indy trannie specialist and will come in at 4.5k

That said I purchased the car for 11k with 250k on the clock so I effectively have a TDV6 D3 with a rebuilt auto for about 16k.
