    Overhaul Alternator ?

    Gday All,

    Has anyone overhauled a alternator ? From what I have heard the parts are not available but that seems odd,

    I have a spare alternator that I removed at around 130k and it was still working fine. From what I have read they are prone to failure from about 140k so just wondering if it's a worthwhile exercise.

    The diodes usually fail before any other component and diode packs are available. However it's not worthwhile replacing the diode pack without replacing the bearings, skimming the slip rings and fitting a new regulator yet the insulation on the wires will have degraded from heat and age. I suggest keeping it as a spare for emergency fitting.

    Thanks Graeme, making sure you put the plug in the back the correct way is a good start when it's fitted. . Thought I should get in first before any one else

    With the cost of new it's basically an economic write off when it needs to be overhauled.

    A family member is the local rep for a significant automotive electrical component manufacturer (not Denso) as suppliers to vehicle manufacturers and to the after-market trade. They do not supply rebuild parts for their alternators because by the time one component fails, the others wont be far behind.

    Is there any chance that reversing that plug has fried the diodes????
    Worth getting it bench tested???,what a pain to go thru the hassle of fitting it and finding its toast.

    I am going to test it , don't think it ran long enough but plan to find out before its needed .
    I was more looking at the viability of a full service but if your not in a rush I think they can be purchased for about $400 . It don't take much to make it uneconomic at $100/hr for a auto sparkie.

    Replacing the diodes has been the norm for years in Land Loosers,they last many a mile if it's done every 100k or so. Pat

    I got the diode bridge / assembly from an eBay seller in Ireland, delivered to Australia for a reasonable cost. The diodes in mine were fried at around 190,000 ks, they went at the same time as the air compressor and the battery, so I suspect some sort of collusion there..

    Otherwise, I used to rebuild & rewind electrical motors and alternators and stuff in a previous life. So in my opinion the stator and rotor are very well built, and the winding enamel was perfectly serviceable. The slipring looked good for a spare, but new brushes needed.

    The only problem I ran into was how to get the clutched pulley off ?? to change the drive end bearing. I didnt want to destroy it so it now sits as one of those projects awaiting more info and a roundtuit.
