Misfuel....... yup never thought i would

So at 0130hrs the other morning after 24hrs + of no sleep I put 30 odd ltrs of PULP in to our TDV6 disco 3s..... all explanations about similarities of BP pump headers aside i basically messed up.

Luckily I realised as I put the pump back on the hook. I paid for the fuel and pushed the car off the pump and parked it and walked home.

Next morning after spending significant time googling all the horror stories we know exist I decided upon a plan of action.

    1. buy new fuel filter to replace old one

    2. siphon the fuel out of the tank with intention of refilling to the brim with Dieso.

hope and hope and hope that I didn't stuff the car.

    this is what really happened.

removed transmission and fuel filter protection plates. identified the fuel filter was a different size to the one Repco had in stock. with no other option I decided to push ahead and remove the filter which was full or predominately diesel. ( after placing a rather large drain pan under that area of car.

Attempt to syphon tank, I think I'm still burping petrol dieso mix... this didnt work. tried jiggle syphon hose hand pumps ( x2) what to do now....

thinking thinking thinking... when you turn on the ignition the electric in tank fuel pump pressurises the line. so I gave it a turn and presto with the fuel filter off I had an instant diesel fountain under the car. Continued to do the same ( forgot to mention I pushed her out of the driveway and down the hill away from the servo in an industrial estate - it was gonna be messy)

That way I pumped 35 to 40 ltrs or so out of the tank until she no pump no more fuel MR....

filled the old filter with diesel, and put 10 litres in the tank. continued turning the ignition to start a couple of times and then with fingers and evertything else crossed went for the start, and lo and behold she started.

very gingerly I drove the short distance back to the servo, in all I put 89 litres in the tank. jumped back in and turned it over....turning turning turning nothing. thinking to myself I had done it now, gave her another crack, she started and I got a short distance before she showed an F on the odo screen ( s model only had 1 digital screen on dash) and died. turned her over again and she did it again - three times in total. the last time shut doen locked doors waited and started again,, and guess what ....

she ran like a bewdy. and in fact ( haven't started her today ) but just spent 2 days driving her down the south coast and back. an touch wood all seems ok.......

So I recon the small amount of pulp in the tank will make a very small difference to combustion and we are filling her up constantly for a while to dilute the tank even more.
Will replace the fuel filter a couple of times to get rid of any crap that's comes through from being cleaned with pulp, and drained to bottom.

I thought I would post it up here as its a good outcome against all of the $6000 nighmare stories..... I'm off to see if she starts now ...

Well done and nice to hear bullet was dodged. On my last trip up north we had 4 cars in the convoy. 2 were close friends and the 4th was a friend of my friend in a Prado. I did not think for a minute his car was petrol as the rest were all diesel and you begin to think petrol 4WD don't exist anymore. In one remote roadhouse extended stop I was inside having lunch and saw him filling up out the corner of my eye. Eventually my turn came to fill up and I went over to the two isolated bowsers which looked like diesel bowsers with black handles etc. it was a miracle one of my friends came out hands waving as I was on autopilot about to fill up. How easy it can happen in a moment of distraction especially when you are away from colour coded city style fuel stations.

In Doomadgee we have this happen a bit during tourist season. Even had a removals truck fill with Opal & another truck put a few litres in.

Because the labels on our pumps are small & that we sell Opal (seems to confuse people) & that we have 2 "Pre-paid" pumps I do up A4 laminated signs for each pump during tourist season.
This seems to help but is not a cure-all because our pumps all look exactly the same & the signs I make blow of the bloody pumps.

Must admit that we've only had 1 tourist do their nana at us over it (man did he go off) the rest just go "Oh ..." & get on with trying to fix the problem.

Anyway, glad it worked out for you.

I haven't used them on fuel bowsers but you could try the velco buttons. They don't deteriorate anywhere near as quickly as any type of tape (sticky/masking/packing/gaffa) does. Much better holding power on many other surfaces.

    Misfuel

On Sunday evening a friend managed to put some ULP into his TD5 Disco. He gave me a call for advice even though he had only put about 8L into it before he realised. It had about 10L of diesel in it so he probably could have filled the tank with diesel and got away with it. Fortunately he wasn't too far away and to avoid any possible damage had it flat bedded to my place. We connected a spare TD5 fuel line I had in my parts collection at the point where the high pressure line (green) from the pump joins the fuel pipe to the FPR. (located on the inside of the chassis opposite the fuel filter) Pumped out the diesel/petrol mixture into a container. (you end up with about 3L left in the tank) Reconnected the fuel line, put 20L of diesel in the tank, bled the system and he was on the road to fill it up with Diesel. Co-incidently the tow truck driver was off to another misfuel job and mentioned that they get about 6 per week on average.

    Angry Mis fuel

Came home from holiday and my son had borrowed the lawn mower. Went around for a chat and he told me his mower wouldn't start so he borrowed mine which went well for a while then stopped after belching out black smoke. You have to wonder what he was thinking. Filled them both up with diesel.
One of the drawbacks of owning a Discovery is the Jerry can gets filled with diesel. Bought a silver one because it was cheap!

    Hi,
Chainsaw motors don't run well on bar oil.

    Why did I do it?

Well, my mate rang me in a tizz one day, he had put 20L of ULP in his Hilux. Best I could come up with was throw a few L of oil in and top up,with diesel..... No problems!!
Now, that was an 84 2.4, not so sure that solution would work with a new common rail.........
