    Loss of engine oil

    Ever since new my D4 MY15 has experienced a loss of engine oil. The first time I became aware of the problem was when we were driving along the Lasseter Hwy from Yulara at 6.00am and the dreaded "Critically Low engine oil" message came up in a lovely tone of red! The anxiety level at that moment was in the red as well let me tell you!
    The car had done about 12,000ks when that happened, however it turned out not to be that "critical" after all as it only needed 1 litre of oil to top it up, but it should not have lost any oil at all after I asked some questions on this forum with the most common response being ?haven't lost a drop of oil between services?

    At the last service and 16 months later, I reported that I am still losing oil. No oil is found to be dripping on the garage floor and I don't seem to have smoke pouring out of the exhaust when accelerating. However you could see a massive build up of crud at the back of the engine ? looked like one of those engines on an old farm truck dumped in the paddock.

    Diagnosis? Loose oil filter housing and faulty oil sensor.
    Solution? Tighten bolts and install new oil sensor ? took 2 days to diagnose and repair under warranty thank goodness.


    I will be monitoring the oil level (whenever I can get that finicky oil level checker on the Service screen to work), but I am not convinced that the problem was just loose bolts. I mean how does an oil filter housing get loose? Or was it never tightened in the first place which is a bit surprising considering the excellent quality control of these vehicles.

    Re the oil level check. You have to wait 10 minutes after engine shutdown before it will show. I try and look before turning the engine on. PITA.

    My new, at the time, D4 HSE MY13 was missing a whole wiring loom for the trailer light connections so quality control is not 100%

    Only 1 litre Loss of engine oil they only hold 5 Loss of engine oil

    As for a loose component, it happens to every manufacturer at some point so it may just be as simple as they claim..

    This is total crap, all internal combustion engines consume oil between services, the dipstick may show "Full" but oil has been lost in the crankcase ventilation system to be burnt in the combustion process and replaced by "soot", that black crap that makes your clean, new oil, dirty, some diesel or petrol fuel will make it's way into the crankcase past the rings.
    If an engine didn't consume some oil then the dipstick would be overfull at your next oil change, Regards Frank.

    Yes - I was surprised when I found that out when looking it up in the manual. Wonder though if a 20% loss should be termed as critical?

    Yes I understand, but I think that respondents were probably exaggerating the fact that the oil level shown on the indicator had not moved.

    No, it didn't lose oil pressure. Would have ran a bit warmer though... no need to be worried.

    My VW Golf GTi used a litre every few thousand km. The manual stated that it's "normal" to use 1L/1000km! You literally didn't need to change the oil and by the time the service interval came along it had been changed twice over. Loss of engine oil
