    Engine Failure

    Hi all,

I have a 2007 Disco TDV6 HSE that I purchased second hand from a LR dealership in Mooroochydore in April 2015.

Recently whilst driving to work, the engine failed and as it turns out the casting that one of the belt pulleys mounts to has broken, resulting in the timing belt coming off and the engine is now toast.

The casting that broke was revised by Land Rover four times within a year, (not sure what year this was) so Land Rover clearly knew there was an issue.

Now the car has done 188,000 kms and is clearly out of warranty but the kicker is that according to my mechanic the VIN of my car indicates that my car should have had the new (stronger) casting and not the old part.

The car has always been serviced at the correct intervals and has a complete service history.

My question is: would it be a complete waste of time to take this up with LR or could it be I have a case for some kind of statutory warranty?

A new engine is going to cost me approx $8250 + labour.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you

    Marianne

You should pursue this with LR at first and if they fuss go your local state & territory consumer protection agency (sometimes called 'consumer affairs' or 'fair trading') can provide you with information about your rights and options.

    Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

I can't really be of any help at all I'm afraid, but in my opinion, I'd be at least talking to an LR dealer about it, and the fact it hasn't been upgraded. Your mechanic should be able to help with this.
As they say, if you don't ask, you'll never know.
Good luck with it all, here's hoping it work out for you.

    Marianne, sorry to hear that.

In this thread there's detail regarding the options someone else with the same failure went throughto source a replacement engine:
    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/l319-disco...explosion.html

And in this thread "ianmck" got relief on costs from LR for a replacement engine but for a different failure (crank shaft):
    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/l319-disco...seized-12.html

Also, I think I read on the UK forum Disco3 that some people with the failed oil pump casting got partial cost assistance from LR too.

So nothing directly identical to your situation but may be of some use.

EDIT: Disco3 threads on the topic:

    Who changed the timing belt?

This should have been done around 166,000 kms, and if that work was done by the LR dealership they should have advised the owner to change out the oil pump housing for the later upgraded casting. This problem is well known in the industry.

Was that timing belt work done while you owned it?
Or is there a service history from the previous owner that might detail that work?

This is all pertinent information to strengthen your case for financial assistance.

    Engine Failure

    Thanks everyone.

vee8auto: My timing belt was replaced at 166,000kms as per the service schedule and it was done by my mechanic (not an LR dealership).

    Thanks again.

My 2007 RRS , same engine as your was fitted with the weaker type pump when i changed it out when doing the belts . According to the UK LR sites it is common for the original pumps to fail within 20k of belt change out , they put this down to the new belt tensioner as a likely cause or maybe the new tensioner bolt was over tourqued when fitting . Good luck with it .

I NEVER replace the timing belt on a tdv6 without replacing the oil pump on pre 2009 models. If the customer doesn't want me to replace the early type pump then I'm not doing the job. Simple.

    my experience

i have had two timing belts changed now on two diff D3's and each time i did a call around for price and details of what was included in change over, was still surprised from some outlets who said they would inspect the old oil pump and refit if no problems to others saying they don't change the oil pump as standard practice. One even boasting they have never had a problem with the older oil pump housing.

On my current vehicle the timing belt was fitted incorrectly apparently they have a directional belt and was fitted wrong, not sure who fitted this belt previously but any mechanic can fit the belt but whether they know what they are doing is another matter. good luck
