Think about all the things that require you put your foot on the brake, such as starting the engine, taking the car out of park, releasing the hand brake etc and you will see why the car chucks a hissy fit if that switch is not working. There are two switches inside the unit, one for the brake light and one for the electronic controls that it provides input to. It is the second switch that can fail, not the actual switch controlling the brake lights.
I have a spare in the rear side panel with some other things like spare wheel sensors but haven't had to use it since my brake switch failed at about 65,000km in suburban Perth.
Get yourself the cheaper Blackbox Solutions Faultmate FCR as a minimum, although the GAP IID is much better. The FCR allows you to read and reset error codes, which is essential in the bush in my opinion. I have used mine on a Cape York trip and in the country near Perth when the car went into limp mode or had suspension errors. I now have the Gap IID and an iPad and leave the FCR at home.
